Name that exhaust

Was told this was a Knight Sports exhaust many moons ago. Can’t find any info about it online and it doesn’t have any identification markings.

That midpipe section looks like a "custom" hackjob. I can't speak for the backbox portion.

Run it everyday. Definitely no room for activities under there.

The mid pipe section was cut and an exhaust cutout was added by the previous owner. He used it on his race FD, I had a cat welded in to pass inspection. He also had the flange welded, he said that’s the only way to keep it from leaking.

The resonators go around the diff.

Looks like the stock exhaust when it’s installed.

The rear section seems like a production exhaust, otherwise they wouldn't go through the trouble to make it 2 piece. But interesting exhaust nonetheless lol.

Nah, just curious if anyone had seen it before.

I am replacing all the rear bushings, so I figured I would snap a pic of it while it’s off the car.

It’s too heavy and old to sell. It’s definitely built by a company. The welds are too good to be a one off (ignoring the mid pipe section, it’s a hack job for sure.) and it’s sectioned to help in shipping. Not saying there aren’t people that can build a one off with good welds, just comparing it to welds I’ve seen from muffler shops. Comparing it to other knightsports exhausts it appears to be the same type mufflers they used, like the setup they had for the FC back in the day.

If I ever get a St. May’s shotgun (which appears highly unlikely) someone can have this exhaust.

Knightsports had a dual-tube exhaust for the FC way back in the day, I actually had one for a hot minute and sold at a profit. Very similar construction on the back end of that exhaust - the mufflers look similar to my memory.

The front/midpipe section looks like someone made it themselves, that doesn't look like the same level of fit and quality the back section is.

I would say it's mighty rare, I've never seen or heard of one! I may have to dig through old Hyper Rev magazines and see if I can find out anything on that.

Yes that looks like the Knight Sports full dual exhaust (except for the midpipe section hack-job). That was a very expensive piece back in the day...almost $2k without shipping iirc! In my youth I actually drooled over and wanted it but knew there was no way lol My friend had one on his Brilliant Black but his family was rich and he used his dad's company to ship him the exhaust. We lost touch when I moved to Japan so I don't know whatever happened to his FD. Hey it's quite possible this used to be on his car cuz I highly doubt not that many ever got brought over here

I wasn’t a fan of the hacked up mid pipe either, but he had it sitting behind his garage in some weeds getting rained on and baked by the sun. I asked him about it and he said I could take it. I take it off every couple of years and refresh the paint on it. The mufflers are starting to rust a little though, not sure how much it would be to have them re-chromed and repacked. Does anyone have any idea of what that costs?

It appears the mid pipe section was cut at that yellow line, green arrow is unchanged (other than the flange being welded to stop exhaust leaks), and red arrow is all the added pieces. Does anyone have a pic of this exhaust in an old magazine so I can get the mid pipe section recreated?

He lives in NC, so not sure if it’s the same guy. I know he was an OG in the RX7 scene. He was on here when this was just a mailing list. Last time I hung out with him he had a 3 Rotor full tube chassis FD with an original Mazdaspeed GTC kit on it. If you need any more proof of the OG status he has a brand new original border burnout body kit hanging on the wall in his shop. I told him to give me dibs on that if he ever decided to sell it.

Sorry the picture isn't super clear, that's as good as I could get. That picture is SUPER small in the magazine.

This was in the first Hyper Rev magazine, they had a number of issues with a list of parts for the car, profile tuning shops, showing tuning shop cars. I think there were 7 issues over the years, this was in the first one, Volume 6 (they also did other cars).

Doing a crappy Google Translate on the picture, it says

Full dual sports muffler FD
Full 60mm diameter dual tube right after the turbine. Has achieved highest class exhaust efficiency. Ultra low sound is almost the same as normal. It corresponds to 400ps or more.
165,000 yen
Knight Sports Company

It looks like with all the silencers it would have been pretty quiet originally. Also it looks like there was a downpipe that immediately went to a dual tube.

The whole exhaust wasn't stainless, it was painted/coated mild steel. If it's rusty and you want to restore it back I'd sand down, neutralize rust, and paint with a high temp paint. If you want to go overboard, ship it to a ceramic coating place and have them media blast and ceramic coat it.

Dale

I’m taking it up to jet-hot, not that far away from their NC headquarters (after the mid pipe gets sorted out). It is a very quiet exhaust, well until you get on it, then it shows some teeth. It has a pretty deep tone, but it doesn’t drone at all. Thank you for finding that info.
