engine wont idle

used to have problems with car, so i rebuilt the carb. had some trouble with the floats at the start but i got them to the right place to. its an 81 gsl and if it gets under around 2000 rpm it dies. if it is above 2000 it runs great. the carb only has one screw for adjustment and we think its the idle bypass, but not entirely sure.we cant adjust the idle because we cant get it to idle. any help would be greatly appreciated.

There should be a air mixture screw and idle adjustment.

We need some more NFO. Did it idle proper befor hand? Does it choke out and die or can you just not get the idle down.

theres the one screw, the under and to the left there is the throttle adjustment screw.from what i can tell in the book, the 79-80 models have the two screws right in a row on top of each other. but mine has one screw. then down under some other stuff is the throttle adjustment screw. ill try and get a picture in a min. it did idle roughly before. and it will run over 2000, but as soon as it goes below it dies. but you constantly have to be on the gas.

maybe a bit simplistic, but have you checked for vacuum leaks already?

well, we got it to idle(around 1500 rpm) but dont ask me how, we just cranked it up again, and i let off the gas expecting it to choke out and die but it didnt it idled. so i took it for a spin to town. i parked and my dad went in the gas station, and i let it idle in nuetral till he got back, went to go and when i stopped to get on the road it cut off, almost like it flooded out while it idled.

i would definately check for vacuum leaks. also make sure to change your fuel filter. it made all kinds of problems for me.
