Engine smoking after shutdown
Engine smoking after shutdown
I replaced the engine, and hoses and there are no leaks as far as I can tell. However, there are a few drips on the metal plate down between the engine and the radiator. There is also noticeable smoke coming up from the exhaust manifold area and it smells kindof sweet like coolant. I've also seen some coolant drops on my driveway, but this has me puzzled. Why or where is it leaking? I'm going to check the drain plug on the radiator. I also pulled the carburator hot air hose that connects to the air filter canister and goes down to the exhaust manifold cover and that hose had the majority of the smoke in it. When I pulled it out, the engine stopped smoking. This will be replaced today, but it still doesn't explain the coolant leak. Any thoughts? TIA.

Was it pulled from another car, or was it rebuilt first? The water seal between the intermediate housing and rotor housing may be letting anti-freeze get into the combustion section. Check the oil and see if there is coolant in it. Run the car for a few minutes, then check it. If you got milky white stuff in the oil, its coolant.
Maybe one of the manifold o-rings didn't seat properly when you installed them? Could also be the water pump leaking and it's spraying onto the exhaust when you're driving. Check to see if there's any signs of coolant on the front cover near the pulley.

Here's an update:
Yesterday, I replaced the carburator heater hose which had a bunch of burn marks on it and was 'shot'. The only one they had was a fiberglass one, so I bought it. It doesn't seem to smoke now, however, there is still a leak somewhere. I tightened some clamps and the radiator drain plug, so maybe that'll do the trick.
By the way, this is off the topic, but I just wanted to say that the car drives much more quickly now than it had! Even with a really bad rotor and distributor cap, it runs really good. I can't wait to hear how it runs with those replaced.
