Engine hesitation.. need help.

Unhappy Engine hesitation.. need help.

My car has been working great, and still works great, but there is something i have noticed more recently.. Whenever the car is at idle (like at a stop light), and i step on the gas, there is a slight hesitation before the engine revs up. The harder i step, the bigger the hesitation. Its more annoying than anything, but i would like to fix it. I have replaced the air-filter, but thats it.

Most cars will hesitate a little when u mash the pedal... I'd adjust the throtle adjustment screw. You might even mess with the idle mixture adjustment screw. Timing may be another thing...

My problem is when I planted abt 80km/h or 3000rpm, the car will just stumble & "dies" off, we check the mixture/spark plugs/leads/dizzy & found out the leading ignitor module was stuffed. Hence no power to drive the engine.

The problem happens even if i lightly tap the gas... Where can I buy new coils for the car? It still has the 2 origional ones that came with the car.

I'd check the fuel pressure and take a look at your fuel filter. Also my have some gunk in your carb. I had this problem waaaay back when I had a 85 12a, so I rebuilt the carb (really just took it all apart to clean and put new gaskets in) and it ran like a dream afterwards. But I'd do the simple stuff first, fuel system cleaner, carb cleaner, replace the fuel filter... blah ....blah.

Couple more questions... Where is the fuel filter? And what do you suggest adding to clean the system (chemical)? I bought some MMO and added it to the gas/oil, but haven't noticed anything yet.

on my 85 the fuel filter is located by the fuel pump by rear drivers side wheel,,,got to change mine often, got stuff in tank that keeps commin out into the filter,,always carry a spare when she starts boggin i know to get the spare on real soon,,,,,,,dont know about which cleaner to use....

yup filter is where donna says it is

And I'd try some regular carb cleaner that you put in the tank and maybe some spray if that doesn't work.

I would only trust MMO... Just putting it in the fuel may not affect performance that much--what you need to do is clean out the carb. If you tap it and it hesitates, that sounds like a dirty fuel line/filter or carb.

I remember when I got the car and changed the fuel filter... When I tilted the filter to pour out the contents, dirt and mud came out...

I'am not to familiar with the stock carbs, but on other carbs I have worked on this problem is useily caused by a bad accelerator pump. This could be either a diaphram type or a plunger type. It's purpose is to inject extra gas into the carbs ventura to help the engine compensate for the extra air entering the engine do to the butterflies opening suddenly when you step on the accelorator. at idle or low revs the engine isn't developing enough vacum to pull enough gas into the engine. When you rebuild a carb a new pump [diaphram or plunger type ] is included in the rebuild kit. Just my two cents

You should be able to check the pump (the cheap way) by turning off the engine and looking directly into the primaries... When you press the pedal or move the linkage open, you should see it squirt gas in...

That's what I remember... not too sure... but give it a try

Getting Worse

It seems the hesitation is getting worse.. When the choke is out and the car is warming up, there is no hesitation... It starts happening when the choke is in.. If all i need to do is adjust the carb, which way should i turn the adjustment screw?

Just try both ways with the car idling... I don't remember which way lets in more or less...

There are two adjustment screws. The easy one to get to, in the middle of the carb, is the air adjustment screw. Counter clock with richen your mix. The other, idle adjust is a little larger and looks like a long barrel with an x hacked in it, thats the one you want. Counter clock with will decrease and clock will increase idle. It is located more toward the rear of the carb and is actually pushing on the linkage, youll find it because its a bitch to get to and turn.
