Angry "Emission Test "Failed"

Today I went in for emission testing. I had no problems with carbon monoxide the requirement is 3.0 and I passed with 0.4. What failed was a surprise but not really due to rotaries reputations. The HC(Hydrocarbons) was 476 when in order to pass it needs to be below 300, basically they explain it's unburned fuel. I adjusted the mixture as low as possible before the test and I put in new plugs, wires, air filter, oil filter, distributor, rotor, and fuel filter. I have a strong belief there is a vacuum leak. What else could cause this to be so high?

Does anyone think it could be a carb problem?? Let make sure about this. If you turn the mixture skrew to the left this makes it makes it more rich and to the right is adding more air..

I don't know about your state (or if it's a nationally mandated thing) but in the state of Texas, you don't have to have the sniff test done on cars 24 years or older. (don't know why they didn't just say 25 years?)

That only adjusts the idle mixture... once you rev up the engine pass 2k rpm, it's up to the jets sizes to determine the richness or leanness of the mixture...

For more complete combustion, you might want to look at/upgrade ignition...

My HC's are through the roof too. RX7Carl sent me an ACV but now I think that might not be the problem because the exhuast still smells damn bad. Unburnt fuel eh? I have new plugs, new wires, new cap-n-rotor. What the heck else could it be?

Was'nt the charcoal cannister removed from your 7 though? That would would certainly cause fuel vapor leech out.

Weird. You must have one helluva vac leak if the fumes still emit that strongly even after the car has been shut down for a while.

Mezzano- You listed all the things done to your car (essentially tune-up items). Have you or someone else checked the timing and for adequate spark both leading/trailing? Pull the plugs and visually check them.

no

I havent checked the timing yet.. I'm taking the car into a "RX7 Guy" on thursday. I'm going to have him check the timing, change the vacuum hoses, proper spark and check the carb. I don't have the time to play so I guess I'll pay.. The car sat for 5 years could this be a compression problem?? but it does run great and flawless up to 95mph.

cdrad51- Thanks for the advance the mech. adjusted the jets in the carb and th HC's dropped. Next week we are going to address the vacuum and the timing but at least when I have it tested on saturday I won't have to worry about stoopid emission testing for another 2 years.. Thanks again guys!!
