Emblems

Okay, the MAZDA emblem on the Mazda Protege? They look smaller than ours..... J/W because I am repainting and possibly reupholstering an FB/S3 I think the dash board is a little bland... No offence to anyone!! Its just kinda empty, so I want to stick some MAZDA emblems in there. Either just above the center console, or on the far right side of the dash somewhere.

I would also like an RX-7 badge to stick in there somewhere. I just think it would busy up the dash a little, and maybe add a talking piece... Sorry if you dont like it, but the emblems are gonna get painted flat black. So it will blend in and look like it was installed factory.

If I do it I will use clear silicone to adhere it to the dash, that way if I dont like it I can remove it. If I like it I will permantly attach them. But I will of course get your opinions first. Most 1st genners seem to have good taste (after all look at what we drive!) so feel free to say something.

Chris

Which gen of protege? Are you talking about the MAZDA, the bud, or the flying M??? Not too bad of an idea. I know the small flying M emblems off my 3rd gen protege hubcaps are going to replace the spot where my hatch keyhole went (wrong key) and the large one like in the front is going on the front of my 7 in between the headlights. Mine will be white, flat black would look good on the inside for sure.

I dont like the flying M that much, I want the Protege emblem that actually has MAZDA spelled out, mostly because it looks identical to our MAZDA badges. I dont know what gen Protege it is, I dont care for them much, there is just a ton of them in the junkyard.

Nothing against the flying M, I like it on the new cars, but I like trying to keep with the badgeing of the era as much as possible. More retro if you will.... I will post a pic in a minute of the emblem I am talking about....

silicone is not an adhesive........ ...if it get hot onthe inside of you car..witch tends to happen in the summer mounths it will fall off... if you want something to test fit them to see how you like it try using some poster puttey or something like that..wont hurt the dash and will come back off....if you like it that install them the right way...silicone is not the right way

Must be first gen protege. The second gen had the bud, and the 3rd had the flying M. My opinion - The bud is by far the worst mazda emblem ever created.

Hey, I said I am using that "temporarily" It will hold the badge in place until I decide weather I like it or not, If I like it it will be Epoxied to the dash.....

Second, there is a such thing as silicone adhesive. It isnt normal silicone, and I use it to hold my shift boots in place. It has worked close to five years running in my siver FB.

Also it is pretty easy to peel silicone off after it dries, and I dont have anything else available to me.

Does anyone have a pic of a 1st gen with the flying M on the header panel? that is the most common spot I have seen. I dont care for it much, unless there is another location that looks better?

lol, yeah thats a 3rd gen protege. HAHA I have one and I totally forgot that there was that small one on the back. OK, I feel like a dumbass now... I would also like to see what the flying M badge looks like before I go glueing stuff onto the front of my newly painted car. Maybe the other location could be.... 1 on each headlight??? That'd be kinda fucked up lol.

They are just glued on so I could get them off with nothing but a flat head screw driver. And there is about four or five of them totalled in the junkyard..... So I figured, why not?

Hey I am a mechanic, so I do beleive you.... There are some idiots out there for sure..... I would use some play-doh or clay to hold it there, but I spent all day yesterday looking and I dont have anything.... I know I have a tube of silicone, and I dont want to spend money on something I will need for.... five minutes? So you can see where I am coming from. I will post some pics, also I will be prepping the emblems with a dremel fun! I bought it God knows how long ago, and never use it.... I am kinda worried that it might eat the plastic, but I need to get the old adhesive off of them.... Well I will go to the junkyard when I get off of work, and get some pics up later tonight!

Dont forget to sand as much of that chrome plating off as you can (its a HUUGE bitch) so the paint will stick good.

you obviously don't have much experience with silicone...it comes in many shapes and sizes big or small...and it most certainly comes as heat resistant...and definitly will not "melt"...and will come off very easily and clean...most silicone based products are fairly heat resistant anyway...hes only putting it on there temporarily so I say why the hell not...definitly not the best way but certainly a good cheap, clean way to do it...

yes i know there are many diff types of silicone..and i know there are heat resistant silicons also...just caz its heat resistant doesint mean that its going to hold something when it gets hot when its used as a glue(god knows ppl think its a type of glue ) .... i was saying as a permant fix it wont work well... for a test fit it will work fine

Actually a silicone adhesive wont melt, I use it on my shift boots as stated before. It becomes essentially rubber, so I can get in while its like 200 degrees in my interior, and shift. Hence jiggling the crap out of the boot, and it never goes anywhere. I considered leaving the emblems up there with it. I am just worried someone will go to touch it, and apply direct pressure, or pull on it. Epoxy is just overall better I think, what if I have to babysit some kids? Well I think you get the picture.

I have two mounted, I dont know what I like better.... I have one above the center console, and one on the glove box, in the upper right hand corner of it. The paint went on well, you dont have to sand the chrome as much as you would think. And you have to be careful as to how much pressure you apply or how far you take it down. Its plastic, and it is fragile, I used a Dremel and it wanted to eat that plastic....

I didnt take pics, thats because my DD needed a battery and a battery hold down. So by the time I got to do it, it was dark. And my camera is a pain to use in the dark, So I promise pics later tonight.

And no, dont get the wrong idea, I am not endorsing silicone as the new duct tape.... When it comes to bonding the rubber of your shift boot to the plastic trim, heck yeah. I will post pics of that so you can see it. For mounting emblems, or for anything other than maybe sealing a window, it should not be used.

And there are silicone adhesives out there, its different than your "home depot" caulking tube silicone. you just need to ask around, I think its better to ask and look stupid, than to do something half assed, and remove any, and all doubt!

Not bad if I say so myself! I think I might keep both of them, or remove the one on the glovebox in favor of an RX-7 emblem. Whatever I do you are sure to hear about it

Let me know what you think!

(Also, it is almost 70 degrees here.... Inside the car it is piping hot! and those emblems are still on the silicone holding strong)

In case you forget the make of car you're sitting in? twice?

I used to have Savannah RX-7 badges, but my aussie supplier disappeared. I've been searching for the part # ever since so I can get more.

LOL, yeah I forget so much I need to be reminded! I just thought it would add a little to the look. I think I am going to knab a second gen RX-7 badge to replace the one on the glovebox. 2 MAZDA's is abit much, but for now they can stay.
