EGT in Header?

How far back from the block should I place them? Also Does anyone know what size bung would i need for the ones from pineapple racing? I would really like to have them installed in my car. I just need to find out how much the whole thing will cost me first.

I have a westech dual EGT gauge I got from aircraft spruce. No bung required. Just a drilled hole. The probes are held in place with a band/gear/worm/radiator clamp. Has woekd great for years for me. Oh its placed at the end of the header (RB RR dual primaries). Approx 24" from the exhaust outlet.

You can put them where ever you want, the trick is knowing what number you are looking for when tuning. On piston engines they are put 6" from the header flange, on our rotarys they fail pretty quickly that close from the high heat.

How do you find out the best temp, you ask? If you go with a distance that someone else uses find out from them. The temps inside the header drop hundreds of degrees over the 24" so every inch matters. If you're just going to put some holes in you header you need to go to the dyno and experiment with air fuel ratios and timing to find out the best power combo and that will give you your number to shoot for later. The best thing the guages are for after tuning is to give you a clue of what is wrong when something goes.

Well i would like to have them when i get my supercharger on ... i don't want to blow the engine from some detonation that could of been avoided for a few bucks. Can you post a link to the ones you have? Also can you guys draw a circle or where would be kinda best for my headers on this picture:

Thanks

I have the Westech dual/clamp that Carl talks of which I installed in a ISC header except that measuring the ISC header is simpler than measuring the Pineapple header.

Had I bougt the header from Pineapple racing I would have asked them for a measurement from WHERE to WHERE to put the hole or bung.

I welded my thermocouple ports in at 9" from the engine flange on my ISC stainless header. I use Omega brand 1/16" diamter stainless steel sheathed ungrounded thermocouples. My PP 13B generates about 1680 deg F. Once while running on a steady state (NOT Dynojet) dyno, the radiant heat from my glowing headers caught their asphalt floor on fire After we got the fire out, we put a piece of sheet metal down as a heat shield to protect their asphalt.

would you guys be able to post some pics of this and where do you have your wiring runing up from? Most of the ones that i see are either on second gen and third gens with turbos, and they're bolting it on the manifolds.

Just measure on the neutral axis of the tube(the side that doesn't have any curve when there is a bend) and put them at equal places. To get an accurate measurement you change the side you are following at every bend, when you get to a seam look for a new neutral side and re-start your measuring.

I use a flat stainless steel ruler that flexes but doesn't kink like a measuring tape. The 9" speedturn suggests sounds like its easy enough to get to the thermocouples to replace them. They will still eventually burn out that close but not nearly as fast as 6" from the flange.
