Question Dumb speed and quickness question

Hello, im only 16 and have had my lisence for 2 months i own a 79 with 82 motor sotck. right now the car is in the midst of finishing up the swap with stock 82. all my friends are commenting that this car is going to be slow and that they will beat me in there little 4 banger corolla's, i looked up stock stats for both cars and i should beat it. i have yet to push any cars yet let alone this new motor,i dont want to go into a race i will lose. Will i win? what types will i be able to compete with. i just need a little confidence. thanks

First of all, you should do a lot of reading (start with the FAQ at the top of this forum)

The '82 engine is 100HP stock.
I don't know the stock HP of a corolla, but I'd imagine you'd be right up there with it. (<<<<< guessing)
Unless they're brand new.

The FAQ has lots of information about easy ways to make your RX-7 faster.

Good luck-- and read lots!

Make sure you practice shifting first :-)
I still can't shift as fast as I'd like to, and I've been driving my car for 3 summers now.

I believe I've heard before that going to a good racing school is the equiv. of adding 100 HP to your engine.

welllllllllll....... if you are not experienced and the other person is then this could be a different story. There really is no guarantee that youll beat him. its very possible that he could smoke you. or you could smoke him.

is his car stock?

the fact that his car is auto and yours is stick as long as you can shift you'll smoke him. i have a 4 banger geo stick and have made nice cars that are auto(if theres such thing) cry its not what you drive but how you drive it if you can shift you should win and if you dont 7 owners will beat you everytime we see you lol jokes

A little advice, the obvious
Don't run your A/C, and roll your windows up.
Just a little hint for drag racing/stop light racing that people often miss for some reason.

The rotaries rev high, so start from a standstill if at all possible. Don't start at 10 like people in BMWs tend to like doing.

The tires'll make a difference. A relatively cheap, big difference.

I've raced (non professionally) in many kinds of cars before. If you need advice, just PM me.

Peace.

Who cares if you win or lose, unless money is involved. In the end, theyre still driving a Corolla!!
If they turn out to be .569 seconds faster than you,so what!!!Challenge them to an autocross course,or a windy switchback road,or ANYTHING else.....I gaurantee the RX-7 can do it better than than a Corolla.Plus, you have a sports car.It will respond better to modifications than an econobox.Straight line speed is nothing,RX-7s were built to do so much more,so much better, than many modern cars.
Just remember to keep it safe, please.

Make sure you race at a track only.

I hate to be the one to say it, but being 16, + 2 months driving experience, + racing a car,are all a bad mix, and very dangerous.

Racing your cars on the street is a good way to lose your fresh license, and hurt, maim, or kill yourself or other innocent people.

I am not going to be a hypocrite and tell you to NEVER street race, but you should
have much, much more experience before attempting anything like racing on the street.

Bt the way, it is pretty much documented fact that it takes the average american a full 5 years or driving before they are considered an experienced driver.

Good luck, and smoke him!

I agree with DF fully. I have a friend who just got his license the other day, and I was cringing the whole time I was watching him drive, and I was gonna say something really harsh to them, but then I remembered when I started driving, I was the EXACT same way, thinking I was all pro and crap. I decided to be a little nicer. I in fact I can remember more than one close call where it was sheer luck that saved me in my Mom Tempo when I first got my license.

All Im saying is be sure to be safe. Good luck though!

OKay, yeah, maybe I myself came across a little wrong on my statement.
I'm sure some people here remember my fun with street racing.
Let's just say that one 64 GTO and one 79 SA are both useless to the drivers now, and we can't claim them on insurance. I'll leave it up to you to guess which one was mine.

I've been driving since I was around 12 years old. That was about when I could reach the pedals to go to the grocery store for my lazy *** Uncle. I do owe him for that, though. You really learn alot about driving RIGHT when you're trying as hard as you can to not attract the attention of the 5-0.

He also taught me racing technique, but always on deserted roads, or on the track. Few people are fortunate as I to have a lazy *** Uncle who teaches his nephew how to do the stuff he no longer has 'time for.'

Anyway, at this stage in your life, keep it on the tracks. Losing a liscense that young would be tough, I'm sure. And, your insurance is going to be hurting you already. You sure as hell don't need a street racing accident on your record.

We all have accidents, we all make mistakes. But, we all keep doint whatever it is we do. What I'm saying, I guess, is that you can only learn by doing it, but don't do it in a situation where it can harm ANYONE, or ANYTHING else.

I think I've babbled on long enough now.

Have fun beating that little mockery of a once 'fair' car!

dude... you have said your not experienced, youve never taken your car to its full potential, and your mates want you to race.

My suggestion is dont race them for a while... find some quiet roads and take the car to the max... so you know what its like up top.. learn how to control it at those speeds and learn how to brake safely and quickly. Be sure you can control your car, dont just think you can.. know you can.

Ive had a few bad experiences but becaus ei knew i could control the car, ive pulled out ok ( example: losing rear wheel at 100km/hr in the middle of the night on a crappy road... i controlled the car, braked safely and eased it off the road.. instead of slammin on the brakes, spinning out and hitting a tree and dying)

so yeah.. just make sure you can handle the car at its fullest, learn to shift fairly fast, and learn to control your steering and braking..

there now i feel like a parent :P

If possible, take yourself out on a place that's wide, open, and where no one is, sort of like the Salt Flats.

Put yourself in emergency situations.

You'll learn REAL good how to get out of them if you've been IN them.

Deffinately keep it off the streets.... if you take out your spare tire you should be able to win, but if you take out your spare and sneak it intoyour friends trunk, you,ll blow him out of the water.

Good call, Yark. Gregs, do you think my Rex is my only car ever? Sorry, but no. The GTO I had before this was miles beyond in power and all around not-safeness, so I've been in plenty of situations. Hell, you're talking to the person that races a truck
