So my driveshaft went poop on me this Monday. Can anyone provide me with some pics on how to remove this? is it hard to remove?

Where can I buy me a new shaft?

i dont have any pics, but its very easy to change, just take of the 4 nuts at the rear in the shaft connecting to the diff and pull it down to dislodge it from the diff, then just slide back away from the tranny, thats all.

& put a pan under the tranny tail, as you'll lose gear oil from the rear opening when the shaft's out.

I back the car onto ramps, this gives enough room to unbolt the 4 bolts at the axle end, and prohibits fluid from dripping out of the tranny. If you have an SA the u-joints are replaceable.

It has been a long time since i worked on a car the had all the stock underbody bits, but I seem to recall it being a pain in the *** with the stock exhaust and all of its assorted heat shielding.

When posting a question for help it would be best to tell us your year.

By searching through your posts (your profile shows a 2nd gen) I gather it is a 82?

If so it has replaceable U-Joints. So you can either get some replacement U-joints and have a shop install them or download a copy of the FSM (from the link in my signature) and do them your self.

Replacement joints can be bought through any auto parts store or the dealer.

Since you are in So Ca their are tons of wrecking yards there and you can just go get a used one or I'm sure that someone in your area (member) may have one.

If you are wanting a replacement drive shaft just look in your local yellow pages or goggle with the terms "Drive line" or "Drive shaft". I found this one which I used to deal with when I was a service Manager at a German repair shop and we had to replace BMW drive shafts.

Then it leads to this question-

What makes you believe your Drive shaft is bad?

Note;
If you do have the vehicle up in the air and the transmission is tilted so that the fluid may run out when you remove the drive shaft you can do one of the following. Spend $4 or $5 at Harbor freight and buy the plastic stopper that fits in the tail shaft housing or take the cap off a can of engine degreaser or brake clean and use that. :-)

Hey guys thanks a bunch for the helpful replys.

I have already checked mazdatrix was the first thing i did and they don't have it for my year of my car.

Hey rx7doctor, my rx7 is indeed an 82
so, the u joints are replaceble... I'm going to replace those too.
and to answer your question why i am so certain is the driveshaft? well, I was driving down the freeway the other day and my car started vibrating all around! it felt like i had 1,000,000 watts of bass in the back. i was really terrified and thought my 7 was about to go boom boom on me lol.

I am going to attempt to take driveshaft off in the morning. keep you guys posted

Loose bolts at the pinion flange where the drive shaft joins the rear end can also cause that same issue.

MazdaTrix does not offer the OEM drive shaft but their version of a aftermarket one but you can find one much cheaper aftermarket. The cheapest route would be just replacing the U-joints.

Could also be a bad trans mount, or a badly out-of-balance tire due to shedding a weight or a tread starting to separate. be sure you check your tires over carefully, and check the trans mount.

Hey guys, sorry i haven't post. it turns out that the U joints are not good anymore. I am going to replace them next week.

Also, please be careful when working on your cars, make sure you don't hit/slide your knees on back of the plates. thing cut me off pretty good. i was surprised how big the cut/blood there was haha
