Drive Shaft U Joints

Replacing the drive shaft u-joints on my early 1979 Rx7. At the risk of sounding stupid, I've never seen u-joints without retainer clips. What holds them in? Do you take them out the same way?

The retaining clips are on the inside of the yokes instead of the outside like you are accustomed to seeing.
