FYI the Mobile 1 filters and K&N filters are made at the same plant... Save yourself $2 and buy the mobile 1

I've been using Napa (Wix) most of the time. Currently I've got a Bosch (Purolator Premium Plus) because it was on sale, and it's been doing it's job fairly well, too.

 

I had a Bosch on the Protege before I went back to Mazda brand. About 1ooo miles after my oil change, it would just **** oil out for about 2o-3o seconds on the first day's start up. It didn't matter if the engine was cold later on and you start it again, it was always the first start. After about 2o-3o seconds it would stop. Weirdest thing. Still love the brand, but I never found out why it did that.

 

Here we go again. tell your fellow RX-7 lover that he knows jack ****. For me to believe it, prove it. Use whatever is available and matches your pocket/ Just my honest opinion.

 

purolater pure one, purolater, k&n, or mobil1 for me. nothing else. a fellow rx7 owner had his motor lock up due to a fram.

 

Blame the user, not the product.

 

i agree with wacky, if you are good about changing your oil every 3k miles then you shouldnt ever have to worry. that being said i buy napa gold ones cuz they are the same price as fram and just feel better (heavier)

 

Another +1 for Wacky. I've used Fram exclusively on all my vehicles for 25 - 30 years, with absolutely no problems. I read the same reports referenced here and swithced for one or two cycles, then read more reviews that said the "upper grade" Fram filters were much improved, so I started using them. I think they're called Tough Guard, but would have to go re-read the reviews to know for sure.

The thing about the Fram oil filters are they are just plain ugly. UGLY! That bright orange has only one purpose, to make muscle cars even uglier than they already are. Purolator Blue is a close second in the ugliness department and there are some others that should be outlawed too. I'm thinking especially of a silver monstrosity that RX-7 friend Greg has on his FB, probably bought back in the early '80s. UGLY!

Since all oil filters basically do their job to a very high level of efficiency and will have absolutely no consequences if they are simply changed out every few oil changes, it is all about the COOLNESS.

I use either:
Nippon
Mazda
Mobil 1
K&N Gold

 

cut a fram open sometime, theres not much going on in there.

if you cut open a mazda filter, and compare it to the fram, the mazda filter has about 10x more filter in there.

the oem mazda filters are made by toyo roki in japan, and the us ones are made in europe

nippon, is another aftermarket

 

i had a bosch bake on to my turboII. I oiled the gasket and everything, it did overheat once but the bastard was so stuck that I had to just replace the filter pedistal (filter was shredded).

 

pfft ricer.

 

purolator pure one, hastings, wix, nappa gold. i have also heard lots of bad things about fram. i figure for a couple of dollars an oil change for the pure one, i'm not going to take any chances.

 

i have never had a problem with fram... but i do agree with ray, the mazda filter looks way better. i had an stp filter in my 85 and liked that cause it matched the breather for the most part lol.
