ok so you should see two xtra exhaust holes

can i just jb weld them shut if i used a header

http://mazdatrix.com/e6.htm look at these gaskets and you can see that the earlier 12a had those extra wholes

Yes they do. They all did. They're for the thermal reactor. And yes I suppose you could JB weld them and hope that it'll hold up, but it's easier to just get a header and not worry about it. The header flange will cover those up and you'll forget they're there. Make sure to get the correct exhaust gasket for the year of the engine if it doesn't come with the header.

yes it is covered in oil has a 1" of grease on it strange as it was rebuilt in 1992

I just recently had extractors put on my 12A. The headers basically blocked these off with the gasket.
