Question Do I need a power steering pump filter?

Okay, time has come for a new P/S pump. However, when I go price shopping online, there's some text below that recommends the purchase of a P/S pump filter (which looks like a regular orifice tube filter). Do I need one of these or no? If so, it would go into the pressure hose, right? This is the first I've ever heard of a filter for the P/S pump.

Who are you ordering it from? There is no filter listed in the Mazda parts breakdown for the P/S system.

Many of our bigger trucks have them in the p/s resevior and lots of my tractors use them too.
If you flush the system occasionally,I dont see it being a problem if you have no filter. There is no large intrusion of dirt, carbon or metal shavings in a P/S system usually. It cant hurt though,I would plumb a filter in the low pressure return line near the resevior or cooler. The high pressure side can see thousands of PSI of pressure,so its better to stick to the return line when doing a cooler or filter install.

What they are refeering to is mainly if you have a Rack And Pinion steering system. Some of the most common failures to that system is due to contamination. In our standard systems it is not needed.

Get it. It's like $5 and fits in the return line. Good prevention.

You don't even need to change the plumbing, simply remove the line, insert the filter inside the line, and put the line back on.

It a preference thing. I agree with the doctor that for the type of steering system we have it is probably not needed. However, I will say that I have replaced 3 rack & pinion stearing gears in other cars that were runined from abrasions in the fluid.
