Do I need to ....

Change any internals when swapping the oil cooler from water to air? And is the water connection under the cooler pressed in or threaded? The nub on the 81 engine has only one connection but the 85 has a tee in it so that the water can come from two different places (heater core and oil cooler).

TIA

internals?????
explain ...

when i did mine, the only thing that needed to be changed was the aluminum "cup-thing" that the filter sit in. it's not there on water-cooled motors, but you need it when you switch to air. you will also need to connect the "now open" water lines ...

Well if you drop the oil pan the rear hose flows into a brass restrictor or regulator. I was just wondering if it would be the same for both setups?

I know what your talking about but dunno if I can describe what to do. So Ill try...

You need to cap off one of the T fittings on the pipe that goes from the heater core (towards the driver side) I welded mine up... (or get one from a pre 83 rx-7)

Now on the motor the T coming from the block, needs to be cut off so theres only a single pipe sticking out... So when done, hose will go straight from the block to the heater core outlet on the drivers side...

Now on the oil cooler thing you just remove the old cooler and mount the new pedestial on there... The oil oil banjo fitting pipe will need to be removed and you will have to make oil cooler hoses to go from the front cover and below the oil pedestial.

If you use a 2nd gen cooler, the hole on top will go to the front cover, the bottom one on the cooler will go to rear of the engine, by the pedistal.. Well hoped I helped!

PS When cutting pipes off, use a pipe cutter, so you dont get metal shars and bits in the oil pipe ...

Thanks Mike, You should know that I have a lot of engine parts around and in my collection is

1. 1980 motor turns over w/ unknown comp
2. 1981 GSL motor spins w/ good comp (bled to death)
3. 1984 motor (in many pieces awaiting funds for porting, rebuild kit, and time)(donations accepted)
4. 1985 motor and you know its condition (got it from you)

these along with all the rest of the tid-bits I have lying around (lol)

so I have all the parts (even some custom made cooler lines to get rid of the banjo bolt) but is the coolant tee pressed in or threaded?Every thing else is pretty much self-explanitory. And do I need to swap the internal brass piece?

Its pressed in I belive, just get a pipe cutter and cut the T off (cutting it off leaving as much showing as you can, to aid in getting a hose on there), leaving a single outlet sticking out of the block... Only way I know to do it rather than disassembling the motor and changing the back steel plate to a pre 83 one..

Hey, damon -

What's the deal with you calling another first-gen forum member a "bunghole" and then saying "no offense" - ??? Like that makes it okay to say something like that? And basically *******-up another person's (smnc) thread when you did that? What kind of stupid **** is that?

I've never seen someone do that on the first-gen forum before.. so I thought I'd post on YOUR thread and see how YOU like it. Am I missing something? Right!

Well to start off with genrex, I didnt call him a bunghole if you were to READ the ENTIRE thread you would know that I had post to warn the NEWBIE that him calling names to some of the members here he would get flamed every time he posts (not a good way to start off around here) So he retalieated with another name (which I know that it is just fun and games) so I retalieated with something just as funny. Now I wasnt tring to be an ******* but I can be. If you read 90% of the threads here most of us get along pretty well and like to have fun and joke around sometimes. If you dont like my actions get over it!

sorry to the mods for the content
