Do the door seals require adhesive to install properly?

Good morning, looking at the long door seals on my car has left me wondering if they are installed and stay in place based on a mechanical fit or if they need adhesive to stay in place.

Any coaching to pass along?

Thanls!

I tried rubber cement on my which are falling off and the cement didn't hold for more than a day. I'm not sure which way is correct but don't try rubber cement lol.

I installed new aftermarket seals (A-1 or something like that) on my GSL and found that they didn't need adhesive to fit well.

They're held in place by clips placed every 6 inches or so and some grooves, and at least for the ones I bought on-line that worked fine.

The advantage was that it was relatively easy to remove the seals and put them on another car, which I did several times.

Best thing would be to try installing them without any adhesive and see how it works, then add the sticky stuff to the problem spots.

+1 to what STU said, they are clipped in at the sides and bottom, and then there is a channel up top that it slots into, so no glue needed

I tried mine dry last year. I don't know if yall did something different but it didn't work worth a ****. I got some 3M window door trim adhesive, that cost all of $4, and they stick real well. Just make sure you follow the directions on the package (I can't attest for not following, but the consequences must be dire for not following them).

They are not designed to need any adhesive for install. OEM seals fit well and work but cost more. I have heard of some guys going with cheaper aftermarket seals, who have encountered difficulties.

I don't know what the OEM ones are running these days but I'll bet they're about twice the cost of these from 1aauto, which is where I bought mine several years ago ($65 then, $85 now).

As I mentioned earlier, the pair I bought worked fine, I'm still using them after 10 years or so and having been on two or three FBs.

Others have reported good results too although you do need to know how to install them properly without tearing the rubber, pulling out the clips and other issues that are the fault of the installer, not the product.

1979-1985 Mazda RX-7 Door Weatherstrip at 1A Auto.com

And another similar product that folks say works well:

Whoops, I see now that both are out of stock. Maybe they will get more, or maybe OEM is the only option? Or maybe OEM is out of stock too???

Good morning.

I just ordered these from my local Mazda deal, here by 9:30 AM tomorrow. In can anyone is looking the part number is 8871-58-760. Seems like OEM is worth the extra $40 (to me anyway).

If you don't mind waiting a couple days this dealer has them at a discount:

Thanks for the discussion and options!

I got the rock auto ones. They are good, but I guess they don't clip as good as the OEM ones do.

Maybe I put them in wrong before I tried the glue, but regardless they stick well with the glue.

I'll post an update on the rockauto seals when I get a chance to install them with photos.

For a limited application specialty part like this it's hard to believe that there is more than one manufacturer out there, seems more likely different brands are putting their names on the same part. We'll see.

I will do the same when I pick up the Mazda OEM ones just as a point of comparison for the other ones that were ordered.

Good idea TD, a service to the RX-7 community for sure. Please try to get pictures fresh out of the package, as you're installing and finished, I'll do the same.

I got a set for the GSL from Black Dragon.
Went right on, clips and the track.
Only issue was they seemed a bit too thick making the doors harder to close.
After a year they did compress to something more reasonable.

I installed one side of the Mazda OEM ones tonight and try for perfectly. Hardest part was getting the old plugs that locate them out.
