How old does it have to be before CA grandfathers in the cars? In TX it's 25 years so 2009 will be my last emissions inspection on my GSL-SE. It still has to be safety inspected, no emissions though. Good luck getting it through SMOG in CA, these cars don't burn so clean. Make sure you cats and air pump are in good working order and the car is thoroughly warmed up before attempting the tests.

Track down the previous owner and lay your boner on his shoulder.

You mean pre-'76 cars, and they are not continuing this (meaning any car made after '76 will always have to be smogged.) and are trying to get rid of it and make ALL cars pass emissions, including the pre-'76er's.

^ I thought i read on the DMV site it was 75?

Whatever, but hasnt california always had rediculously strict emissions laws. So are emissions different numbers for new cars vs the older cars or do all the cars have to meet one set of numbers for each toxin?

in ohio they are actually thinking about getting rid of e check... the studies that they have done show no significant decrease in air pollution... only certain counties have it (all the ones that could make money). Now its free to have your car smogged (the cigarette smokers tax pays for it now) and if you cant pass all you have to do is show a bill from a mechanic over $300 for repairs to help it try and pass and you get a free pass even if it fails again.. cars 25+ yrs old dont need an e-check either
