Distributor Lip

The reason my dad sold his 79 RX7 is because he didn't want to (no time or place to, nor did he have the money to pay somebody to) tear the engine apart to replace the bad distributor. The mechanic he took the car to said they get a lip around them ans is almost impossible to remove them normally after that. IIs there any solution to this problem?

You remove the single bolt that sets the timing adjustment for the dizzy and simply pull up on it to remove it. Someone needs to find a new mechanic. In my sig is a link to the online FSMs, carb manual, etc.. Download the 80 manual and you will see how the dizzy sets in the engine. You might download the 85 manual too since it has more detail and better pics. The only difference between the dizzys of those years is the early one has points, the later one is electronic.

You may need to tap up from the bottom of the dizzy as they can stick with age.

From what my dad told me, he did.
They all said the same thing (2 or 3 different guys)
My dad even looked, an extremely hard carbon lip that would've reqd the engine to be taken apart of chemical blasted into it.

even if the aluminum housing was gaulded to the front cover, removing the front cover is all that would be needed. those so called mechanics didn't know what they were talking about. there's no lip, carbon or otherwise that would keep it from coming out. now go loosen that bolt that locks it from turning, twist it left and right while pulling on it and pull it out.

How long has this car been sitting that it's built up enough carbon to cause a problem there? Get a pry bar and a can "o" spinach and give er ****.

I'm sorry but that's the stupidest thing I've ever read on this forum. Smack your dad and that 'mechanic' for me.

I always wonder how people come up with ill-conceived theories on things. How would this happen on ANY engine?

This sounds like the old kids game of "Telephone". Reading through this, I believe there has been a misunderstanding or miscommunications between the mechanic, dad, and now the son about the diagnosis.

Doesn't sound like a conversation related even remotely to a distributor issue. Are you sure he said distributor?

Either way, don't listen to your mechanic. He gets a bonus from the government for every occasion where he is able to confuse the owner of a rotary powered car into disposing of said car because it would "cost too much money to make it worth fixing". Seriously though, they are evil creatures...

Listen to us instead; because we're all much smarter, better informed, better looking, and better in bed than any auto mechanic out there... Bring facts and one of these bright fellows will hand you solutions...

Nothing that could cause this? Maybe there is a miscommunication, or my dad's memory, this was a long time ago.
Well, the person he sold the car to was an RX7 NUT (in a good way) my mom said, he was to RX7s as I am to AMC Eagles
