Direct fire

I have a 80 with a 13B 4 port w/ a large streetport and a holley setup. Is the direct fire setup worth it? I wanna do it but wanna see what people think? Thanks.

Totally worth it. What type of dizzy do you have? Is it the '80 style with the long wires over to the fender with a clunky box and two J-105 ignitors? How is your exhaust situation? Header, right?

gonnz, you have a few options. I'll probably get to look at kettleman's setup some time today.

It mostly depends on what you already have laying around, or what's cheapest in your area. I'm still a fan of DLIDFIS where each leading plug gets its own coil and ignitor, but I was impressed with the FC leading coil while bench testing it. I had disowned my MSD several years ago when it gave me mediocre performance while following Paul Yaw's instructions (to hook it to two coils in parallel... which weakens its already low amp output). Then recently I hooked my MSD up to an FC leading coil I had picked up a little while ago, and it seemed to work quite well. I plan on building a high revving engine with carbon apex seals, and the MSD will be used on the FC leading coil to take advantage of the MSD's rev limiter (it's a 6AL).

As for using an FC leading coil cheaply rxtasy3, you could hook its ignitor to your J-109 leading ignitor with a 1k ohm resistor or something. Sorry, I know it's possible to do such a mod, but I don't know how yet. Since the FC's leading ignitor's dwell is controlled by the ECU, it's best to either electrically remove the ignitor and wire up something else (J-109, GM HEI ignitor, MSD, Crane etc) to the coil (either with or without the ballast resistor), or let a J-109 trigger it. Some people here have just gone with a J-109 hooked through the ballast resistor and then to the coil. It seems to work fine for them. Others here will say itls best to use FC ignitors whenever possible (easier said than done on an FB/SA dizzy).

The FAQ should answer all your questions other than how to connect a J-109 to the FC leading ignitor, as I mentioned above. I think only 83turbo (or whatever his name is) knows how to do that particular mod. I wish I knew how to mess around with FC stuff as much as I know FB stuff.

thanx for the reply jeff, but i was talking about using the dizzy of the 2nd gen also, doing away with the cap and rotor. i figured there would be resistance issues, that's why i thought of using the complete 2nd gen setup.
