Thumbs up damn standard rx7 diffs

What up :P

Ive had a 1983 Series 2 for some time now (few years)

Im up to my 16th differential, they break so easily!.

I keep breaking the smaller pin, that holds the large pin in place (inside the diff centre). When this small pin breaks, it allows the large pin to move up and down, making it spin around, and hit my pinion gear. (Doesnt take too long before it goes boom.)

Some diffs I thrashed lasted longer than diffs I tried to drive nicely. I now weld them up real good, thats the only way they can last. Now I have a broken axle (duh, knew it was gonna happen eventually) - So now I wanna find out what causes this little pin to break. Anyone got any ideas?

Also in australia, where can I get a limited slip diff that would pop straight into the standard axle housing?

What kinda power and tires do you have?? I have heard of stock diffs handling up to 300 hp on slicks. I rarely read of a broken diff on these forums.

I agree with 85rotarypower, to go through 16 diffs indicates you are doing something wrong or pushing way to much power through a stock setup.
Do you have pictures of what is breaking?
Are you putting new guts into an existing housing? If so you may have a misaligned housing or axle that is straining the diff.
Under what conditions are they breaking? Launch, cruise, corner?
Climate? I know Austrailia is fairly warm, but thats about it. Are you getting a lot of coastal moisture? Is the desert drying a seal out?

come to think of it, yes I have been using the same axle housing for all these diffs, same axles also, and same tailshaft (which I think needs a balance)

so, a new housing, axles, centre, and tailshaft.

but out of interest, thinking about how the diff actualy works, I cant seem to see why a misalignment could cause this problem.

Quit doing one wheeled burnouts.

The small pin breaks only when you've got one tire spinning lots faster than the other, when under load. The little spider gears spin really fast when one tire's spinning and the other isn't, and they can grab the spider gear shaft and twist its little pin right apart. Then the spider gear shaft starts whacking the pinion gear... always fun.

Had to drive about 200km without letting off, since I broke the diff at the start of the trip. Let off and WHAMWHAMWHAM, at lower speeds it'd lock up altogether.

When you feel one tire grab, or that only one tire is spinning, LET OFF! Or plan on doing a lot more than 16...

I dont do one wheeled burnouts, they suck, all the burnouts in those clips are 2 wheeled, cause I had it locked at the time. And in theory, you cant break the smaller pin with one wheeled burnouts, cause even tho your twisting the larger pin with one gear, the other gear at the other side is balancing the twist :P

It must be something of a misalignment. Cause as I said, sometimes I wont even thrash a new diff, and sometimes Ill get LESS life out of it.

But yes I get the same symptoms, have to keep speed up, and not "cruise" (had to be either accell or decell). Damn things

Trust me, it's from one wheeled burnouts. All it takes is for one gear to grab the shaft before the other.

When I broke my diff, it was after a long (about half km) burnout in 3rd gear. Only one tire spinning.

I see broken diffs all the time, and it's almost always after the cuistomer got their car stuck and only one tire was spinning, so they kept trying to move and eventually the shaft pin snaps and the shaft swings out and destroys the trans case (FWDs obviously, RWDs are rare in the US)
