My 84 gsl- se was alomost ready to be driveable again but due to a very small leak coming the the oil cooler line I decided to remove the fitings and add some teflon tap to keep it from leaking. Well after getting it all bavk together the lead was freaking awful! SO i look close from a different angle and saw a hairline crack about half inch long coming from the fitting. Can these things be welded? Or do i just need to find a replacement?

 

Find someone who can TIG Weld Aluminum and have it welded. You'll probably need to clean it out and drain it so it doesn't catch fire when welding, but it is repairable. Its a common issue that's been mentioned many times before in the forum.

 

Along with a good cleaning for a sound weld bead, groove the crack for deeper weld penetration. I use a 1/8" bur.

hey, the same thing happened to me i have an 85 gsl-se, and i had to buy it from mazdatrix.com for $520 (w/o shipping). It is a brand new unit straight from mazda Japan. they were really quik with the order even though i shipped ground. i was very happy with it and there is nothing like stock quality, worth every penny, and the quality is better than the old ones. if you have the money i also went with stainless braided lines with adapters from racingbeat.com they are $135 (w/o shipping) these are good insurance that you will not have any leaks. i went to a rad shop to get mine fixed and they turned me away since it was sucha tough weld to do, additionally i tried J-B weld which did not work at all. if you can't get it fixed then at least get the cooler it is well worth it.
