I just get stares of annoyance especially since I'm still on NM plates in Ok. Why did they ticket you for the historic plates?

Do you use thr car as a daily driver or occational driving? This might help:

Lawriter - ORC - 4503.181 Historical motor vehicles.
4503.181 Historical motor vehicles.
(A) As used in this section, “historical motor vehicle” means any motor vehicle that is more than twenty-five years old and that is owned solely as a collector’s item and for participation in club activities, exhibitions, tours, parades, and similar uses, but in no event is used for general transportation.

Well, now you know.

You should have been a position to say, "Even show cars have to buy gas, officer" or "I just finished [insert technical repair here] and for safety reasons it's important I test the car's handling before the next event."

It still might not have saved you, but it's better than just volunteering for a ticket by breaking the clear meaning of the statute.

I always have a spare part in the wrapping inside the car. It makes for a nice excuse that you just bought it *conviently threw out the receipt*

If that is the way the section reads then anyone should be able to drive from A-to b no matter where so long as they don't see you day after day driving the same route and going to the same places and to prove that they would need to follow you more than one time . It seems like a fine line and could very well be won in court . That said then they would follow you and kick butt if you continued but for one time you should be able to leave court with a smile .

Yeah, that is kind of a bummer. Period correct plates look the best on FB's in my opinion. Maybe the court will let you off with a warning - who knows?

I generally bike commute or walk to work, so i truly only drive my car for "enthusaist events". For instance:

I get SUPER enthused every time i drive this car over to the mall or the bottle shop, heck, anywhere really! I am one enthusiastic driver! I parade that **** around town any day of the week. However it is not my daily driver.

I'm fairly certain my arguments are clear, logical, and will be heard out by any respectable officer of the law.

But for reals - I have one more year until I can get vintage plates for the car and I've debated it long and hard. Ultimately I'll probably just get a set of plates and hang them for shows and such.

When I lived in Maryland and had historical plates, that's the plan I used. I memorized a short list (5 or 6 vendors or dealers) for the parts of the area that I routinely visited. (Example: Mazda dealer about 4 miles from where I worked) If stopped, I was on my way there or back. I was only stopped once, though. It worked.

I've been pulled over for expired tags a few times. Once I got pulled over the first time I took the car out after a long winter. Literally two miles down the road, two cop cars pass by on the other side of the divided highway. I watch in my rear view as they pull into a gas station, whip around the parking lot, and pull back out and start chasing me. Lights come on, I pull over. I wasn't speeding. They tell me it was for expired tags. I started interrogating the cop, asking him how he saw the sticker on my plate from his rear view mirror, and why they both felt it necessary to turn around at a gas station and come after me for it. He lied and said they never turned around, and that they "just happened to be going in the same direction." Jerk had the nerve to ask if my car was "a twin turbo" as he was writing my ticket. I just bit the bullet and paid that one.

Years ago I had a similar situation in some stinkhole town in South Carolina I was passing through. They wrote me a $200+ ticket for my tag being 2 weeks expired. I guess they figured I wouldn't drive out there to try and fight it in court. Correct, but no way was I going to pay it either They sent me threatening letters and what-not to no avail. Not sure what the statute of limitations is on that - I figure I still have a warrant in the Secession State. Not that I care - aside from Hilton Head, I have no reason to go there.

I'm not from Ohio nor have I every lived there, but I think one reason they crackdown on this is because if a car has historical plates, you don't pay taxes.

I read about those a couple years later and it really made me wonder if that was it. It's the only way he could have known. I try to keep my plates at least somewhat obstructed now. Since I rallycross the car now, I can just smear some mud over it and plead ignorance.

Woah... And that article isn't even giving much info on it - I'm sure there's more to it than it just reading plates

There can be. My cousin is a cop in California and he was telling me it can also remember the location of where cars are/the general area it is usually parked for surveillance and/or finding a criminal.

He also mentioned some cities/towns take pictures of your plates as soon as you enter their city limits. pretty crazy stuff

read the local laws regarding specialty plates. I have "collector" plates on my Rx and in the Wis DOT rules it states

"Collector registration does not expire for as long as you own the vehicle. However, Collector registration is not valid during the month of January."

We have antique tags here in TN. The taxes are significantly less and they only need to be renewed every 5 years. The catch is that the vehicle must be 25 years or older (all first gens now) and it's only valid on weekends and for special events. I decided to keep regular tags since I like to occasionally take a romp on the Dragon on the weekdays when traffic isn't bad. And in the rare case that we get snow here, I'm taking it out to play.
