coolant temperature/ oil cooler

I recently bought a 79 RX-7 and had to install a new radiator. i got the stock radiator from mazdatrix and installed it. now when the car is running the temperature guage barely moves up. is there such a thing as running too cool for an RX-7? also when installing the radiator we damaged the oil cooler. i was going to get a hayden light duty oil cooler and mount that in there. would this provide sufficent cooling?

If its running too cool, it is possible that the t-stat is stuck open. However, it wouldnt trust a 20yr + gauges...

Now how did you damage the OC. If its just slightly bent (including bent fins), thats minimal and I wouldnt worry about it. Just fix them fins as they are very beneficial in cooling (routes the air directly the core, instead of just dong a drive-by). Hayden? nah, just use your existing OC for now. The stock OC (including FC's) are good.

If you are basing your engine runing too cool by the temp gauge, keep in mind that the normal position for the needle is about 1/3 between cold and hot. If you have doubts as to the actual operating temperature, install an aftermarket gauge. The front mount oil cooler provides about 30% of total engine cooling. Replacing the fmoc with any other oil cooler besides one from a rotary is a very bad idea.

Post pics of the damage to the stock cooler and another one showing the needle position of the temp gauge when the engine is at operating temp.

i'll take some pics tomorrow and post them. i know the temp guage works because it went up half way with the old radiator. im guessing this radiator cools a lot better since it is aftermarket and i will need to get a warmer thermostat? as far as the oil cooler goes when i started up the car the next day it started leaking ALOT of oil. i started taking it out today. im going to go to the junk yard tomorrow and see if they have a first gen one or could i fit a second gen cooler? i wont be able to post a pic of operating temp until i fix the oil cooler.

You don't need a warmer thermostat, the old radiator wasn't cooling well enough. where is the oil cooler leaking from, one of the bungs? Those can be heliarced.

Sorry to jump in on this thread but why is this a problem ?? Im installing a 13b egi into my FB and want to get rid of the beehive. Been looking at a Setrab oil cooler, possibly a 404x122mmx50mm cooler. Would this be big enough ?

Most of the oil coolers that have been posted up as replacement options have been to small and inefficient. Since I still do in/ft, how do the measurements you posted compare to a stock cooler.

Blimey just done a search and the T2 one is huge !!!!

Stock Oil cooler dimensions
Length (including endtanks) 22.5"
Length (core only) 19.75"
