compression question

i know this is kindo of a lame question but...

when you're testing your compression does it matter if the engine is hot or cold?

thanks.

It should be warmed up. Usually you'll crank cold and get some smoke and heavy cologne until it gets warmed up... the stock choke will have have turned off by then ( if you still have one... I don't ). Then turn it off and test your compression. See all the great threads by using the search.

Not lame at all. Cold compression is higher than hot compression.

oh see i got around 65 or so on all sides of the rotors so i figured it must have been allright.
also it wasn't a mazda tester just a regular one, i'm not sure if that makes a big difference but it's probably less accurate.

thakns.

Cold compression is higher because cold air is denser. The denser the air, the higher the compression will be. You may be getting higher compression readings because a hot engine's internals are warmer, and expanded, and possibly sealing better. All the tolerences on a hot motor will be tighter than a cold motor. Theoretically, a cold engine should have higher compression, though.

Nah, cause if he calls me that, I'll call him a two word something like bloated lackey and he'd spend all night googling to find out what he is.
