A cold weather issue

Wondering if you guys ever had problems with cold (cool for you northerners) weather. Past few weeks it has been dipping into the 40s which is chilly enough for Texas. Of course it takes a few more cranks for the car to start up while it is cold, but what is interesting is how the car reacts as soon as the choke goes in.

I let it go in automaticly on cold days so it can warm up nicely, but once it is in the car is sure to die at least once. If it doesn't die, it will idle really low for a while and want to die. If I give it a bit of gas it will stay running and eventually clear up to idle perfectly. It only does this for about 3 min after the choke goes in.

Any ideas?

At a guess, I'm going to assume you're running a 12a with the Nikki Carburator?

I have this issue too, particularly on cold days, the engine will die if i shift to neutral and coast to a stop.. or idle will dip down to 500 rpm or lower, and then pick up. or just not idle at all without my foot on the throttle.

I never found a "fix" for it either, i just have learned to goose the throttle when I'm coasting to a stop, just so i don't stall

I set the idle up to about 1000 in the winter months. Then you don't have to worry about it.

Well I think the problem could be related to low compression. My DD is like that and the compression is like 90 psi. Shes old and tired. Once it starts its fine so your other idle issues are something else. Why dont you let it warm up on the choke? Could be a small vacuum leak also.

Arg, don't tell me that I like to imagine that my 12a's in good health!

isn't it bad to run the car on choke? Cause it runs too rich and the gas dilutes the oil too much?

Exactly. My 12a was rebuilt not that long ago.

I normaly idle around 1k. I wonder if I just need to rebuild the carb and set a good baseline to work off of.
