Stupid Question: Install motor w/o trans

if i put the motor back in the car without the transmission, (waiting to buy a clutch and want to make some damn progress) is it okay for the motor to sit on that steering...bar...seeing the transmission kinda holds up the motor?

Not on the pan but on the edge of the oil pan.

I understand your need for progress. You could also use the jack that came with the car & a narrow strip of wood on the rear edge of the pan to support the rear of the motor. The 1/2 inch width where the pan attachment bolts are.

Now if you put your need for progress away it is a whole bunch easier & a less pain in the a$$ to install the clutch, the transmission & then install the entire assembly into the car at once.

What he said ^^^^^ and /or you can use a floor jack to rasie up the motor a bit and slide in a wood block to lower it back down on. Either way is good.

Keep the engine out and install the clutch and tranny together with it out of the car, then install the whole assembly. Its MUCH easier to install a clutch and tranny with the engine out. If you put the engine in now, you'll be cursing later.

benchpressing @ tranny's bellhousing and rope @ tailshaft helps a lot. AND be sure to clean the clutch disc's spline area for excess paint so the input shaft will slide right in. In addition, if you dont have the right angle (ie, tranny to engine), of course, it will be a bitch to install the tranny.

6-1st Gens Later and 10 either Clutch changes or any time I have removed the Engine.
Best to Install the Engine and Trannie Together!!!
Done it Both Ways and the only way to Line-Up the 2 is on the Ground.
No Question that way the (Pilot Bearing) is on the Shaft Correctly....
I have spent as much as 3hrs trying to get everthing bolted and lined up right on my Back and unless it envoles Sex no thanks to that way to Mate.
Anyhow go with the above suggestions and Put them together with a Bud to angle the install of the whole assembly into the Bay.

If you work alone, its not easy to re-install the hood and then re-check every side to make sure that its squared away.

I would go with waiting. When I installed my rebuilt into my car I had put the tranny on before dropping it in, But I have also had to drop the tranny to replace a Clutch and a Pilot bearing, it is no fun, and you risk messing something else up, becuase you cant see too well when your lying on your back with a tranny on your chest.

I know its hard to wait, but you will be glad you did in the long run.

I'd wait and put them in together too, but to answer your question, I removed the tranny from my parts car to put in another car and the engine seems to hang in there just fine sitting on the motor mounts. You might add a block or too for some reassurance, but still, putting the engine and tranny back together first sounds like the way to go.
