Apparently it's a fairly common problem for this particular piece of equipment to go out on 1st Gen's.

My questions for anyone are:
1. Other than the puttering sound as my '84 GSL de-celerates, (annoying as it may be) does it prevent anything else?
2. Should I even bother to replace it? (It's already been replaced 2-3 times by the previous owner in the last 10 years)
3. Is it difficult to replace?
4. Anything anyone else wants to add about this part, feel free.

you can get around the coasting valve by blocking off the vacum line to the air cleaner with a bolt in the hose.
it can be a pain in the butt to service the valve.

 

I guess without the coasting valve, I can't get around the sputtering as the engine revs down, huh?

Has anyone else had any experience with installing a new valve? Any personal info on replacing one would be great. (and before anyone says anything, yes, I have seen that one link on a website (that I can't find now) that shows how to replace it.)

 

Once the carb's off, it's bloody easy to replace.

The bugger is getting the carb off! You pretty much need a BENT 12mm carb wrench (ask Rx7Carl... he has pictures of the ones he uses on his cardomain page).

Just take lots of notes of where things came from, and use tape and a pen to mark things. It's simple if you take your time.

i found it kinda hard getting the screws off the flapper.. so i took a drill to it, but other than that i wouldn't think it'd be too hard.. but if you're wanting to keep then chances are you got all emissions still intact, where i have none.. i can get the carb off in 5 minutes, with a regular 12 wrench.

 

I DID want to keep the emissions stuff in tact until I realized that it's going to cost me too much to make the damn thing pass, so to hell with the emissions crap. I just need to make sure that I don't screw up anything that would make my car run bad if I take any emissions stuff off.... I haven't searched for it, but is there a thread that talks specifically about how to handle removing the emissions stuff and still make the car run fine (as far as running goes... not as far as emissions goes)

I took off my intake removed the valve completely (I had to cut off the butterfly the screws stripped out) and plugged the holes with a dowel with silicone on them and port and polished it. I havent yet flow tested it though ,but do have a stock one if less air flows through.
