clutch info needed for 13bt swap

Hi, im getting under way on my 13bt swap into my 85, and i need to know what clutch can be used if im still keeping the 12a's tranny in the car. im not clear on what exactly needs to be done concerning which flywheel/clutch combo to fit in the N/A bellhousing

any help would be appreciated. ive got an ACT extreme in the TII right now, and itd be nice to be able to carry it over into the 85 in the na tranny if possible.

i plan on putting a TII box in it eventually, just right now for ease of getting things done, im gonna use the stock box.

You will need a 83- 12a/NA flywheel and clutch.

You might want to buy an aftermarket flywheel and rear counterweight to make sure everything is balanced.

you could buy the same year model flywheel off an NA and that should work as they had the same rotor weights, but I do not know.

You COULD use a 2nd-gen N/A flywheel for the same year range as your T2 engine. (IE if you have an '87 T2 engine then get an '86-88 N/A flywheel)

will i be able to retain my ACT clutch? will a TII clutch fit in the NA bell housing? or am i stuck using a first gen N/A clutch if i stick with the N/A gear box?

You will need a TII Counterweight as well.

I do not think he will, if he uses the same year range na flywheel, it has the same rotor weights as the T2.

The na flywheel is smaller in diameter than the T2 and you cannot use your clutch. The t2 flywheel will not fit in the na bellhousing, and the starter would be in the wrong place anyway.

YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO USE A N/A TRANNY WITH TII CLUTCH.

the spline on the input shaft is different on the two. Plus you know that the N/A tranny won't last long with the TII engine. WHy don't you just buy a TII tranny??

No you can't use an N/A tranny with a T2 flywheel or clutch. The clutch's splines are different, and the trans won't fit over the flywheel.

The tranny's lifespan will probably be measured in terms of days, or maybe hours But if you use a N/A sized clutch, and use a STOCK clutch, so the clutch slips, then the tranny might last.

I just figured that since you wanted to use a weak tranny that you didn't care about putting the power down

like i said, i intend on putting a TII gear box in it eventually, just not right off the bat for ease of getting things under way. i didnt realize the NA gearbox was that weak, as ive heard of people running 10's on the stock box and rear end in first gens.

ive got a TII gear box to put in the car if i want to, its just a matter of how hard it is to get it all to bolt up, because i dont have the ability to weld custom mounts if need be right now.

What you don't know is that they also use stock clutches so the clutch slips a lot, and they still replace the transmissions frequently.

Someone here is putting down big horsepower (rice racing?) with a stock rearend but he changes the axles regularly as a matter of maintenance...

I guess this is where I should say my .02. Just use the T2 trans, there is no welding/cutting that needs to be done to get in the car. You should take a look at my thread (pretty sure it's in the archive) on how to mod a T2 trans to fit in a FB. There are two things that needs to be done to make it fit in there.
1. Make the shift rod shorter and re-drill, (explains how to do this in the thread)
2. Make a spacer in place of the stock n/a trans mount thats 3/4" thick.

Just do a search under my name and you will find how to do it all.

If you already have the clutch and flywheel off your T2 that makes it all the cheeper. But then you do have to buy a driveshaft to fit the T2 trans to the FB rear.

I'd say put the T2 trans in there and sell the n/a one. Just my .02
