Clutch fork compatibility question

so no one can seem to answer tis question with certainty. figured i would come here and see if anyone knew for sure.

i have a 1982 GSL with a 12a. stock transmission but it has a flywheel, clutch and pressure plate from 83+. the clutch fork is bad/worn and i am fairly certain causing the mysterious slipping issue (it slips only in 4th and 5th upon acceleration and when its cold out in third as well) i am having.

well i called mazda this morning and they no longer offer this part for the 82. mazdatrix also does not offer this part for my car. they do offer the part for the 13b motor however (different transmission but same throwout bearing) now the question becomes are the 13b and the 12a clutch fork compatible?

the part looks like this

it goes from the slave cylinder to the throw out/release bearing.

please help.

Hey 2cute,

It's been awhile since I've seen you on here.

Anyway, this is what I have for part numbers:

All 12A through Oct. 84 production: 8540-16-520A
Nov. 84 on (12A) and all GSL-SE: N204-16-520

Since you have an '82 tranny, you should get the 8540-16-520A one. Check the dealer. I find that their prices aren't much more (sometimes less) than Mazdatrix. Also, no shipping cost and they get stuff fast, generally.

Good luck.

Kent

that was my original idea. to get it from mazda i mean.

however, being the first place i called, they no longer offer the part. i then in turn went to mazdatrix.

but thanks for the info let me try a different dealership maybe that guy was just retarded.

It helps if you have the part number. A lot of guys don't want to bother looking it up because these cars are old and the part numbers are on micro-fiche. Sometimes they'll just say something is no longer available, or "We don't carry parts for cars made before xxxx". Just lazy sometimes.

Try some dealers. If not, try atkins, black dragon, etc. I'll keep a look out too and will let you know if I come across a place that sell them.

Edit: was typing when you posted. Try some of the other places or maybe ebay? or used somewhere?

Too bad that no one has caught the fact that a worn out fork will not cause slippage. Once you shift, the clutch is what either grabs or does not grab. But since you have to take the trans out to change the fork now you can repair the real problem, the clutch. :-)

right i understand that but if the thing isnt engaging or disengaging properly because it cant i believe it would cause a problem but idk im more than likely wrong. who knows.

it will hopefully be in pieces here in the next couple days. might i add the clutch disc and pressure plate were just replaced. initially i thought it was just that as the disc was done for. but apparently not the case.
