clutch fluid
whats the big diff between dot 3 or dot 4????..Can you mix them. ( not that I want to but just in case it happens)...I had a 83 gsl and it needed brake fluid so I put in 3 but it could of had 4 in it.. ...just asking>>?%^$$&^&%^&^&^&(*^*....cjf........

4 has a higher boiling point. 3 is cheaper. If it uses 3, you can use 4 as well. If it uses 4 only, then do not use 3... If you race, you should probably use 4.
DO NOT USE 5! 3 and 4 are alcohol based, I believe. 5 is silicon based. It is not compatible with 3/4 seals or the fluid itself.

3 should be *fine*. The clutch hydraulics don't heat up like the brake hydraulics do, so boiling isn't a problem.
Don't get me wrong, I have high-temp synthetic DOT4 in my brake system.
(Even better than the Ford 550deg stuff!) Weeny little 7-inch discs and 6.5"(?) drums make lots heat. But you're supposed to throw away unused brake fluid after opening the cap, so when I had to do my clutch hydraulics I just picked up a pint of the cheapest DOT3 available... for what the clutch hydraulics have to do, it's more than good enough.
FWIW I also laugh at braided steel clutch lines....
Clutches are a low-pressure high-motion system and don't benefit like the brakes, which are high-pressure low-travel. (Or at least the should be.
