Has anyone used re-settable breakers in place of the fusible links? I saw them used on a rock crawler in place of either a master fuse or fusible links.

The don't pop often, but they are rather rare if you need one.

 

why not just use the cheap cartridge fuses that plug right in? I've had them in almost every mazda and Fazda I've owned and never blew one ever.

 

They were popular in the 90s in the car audio industry. I never bothered. If you blow the main fuse, you're doing something seriously wrong and don't deserve to be able to just flip a switch and keep going. But with an offroad vehicle, I could see situations, like if you were submerged in water and shorted the battery while trucking in the middle of nowhere, you might want to be able to keep moving when the truck dries out without requiring spare fuses.

 

I use these as they are more modern and easier to deal with than the old fusible links.

I've heard about it, but i agree with Chuyler, if you blow it, you should not be able to just flip and move on till it blows again. On my 280z with their shitty wiring i did the MAXI fuse upgrade for the fusible link and i will probably be doing a similar upgrade to the FB. The MAXI fuses provided robustness and bring you up to date with newer systems. This is personal preference, some swear by the fusible links and say that the MAXI fuses dont provide the same protection because its a fuse and not a fusible link. I say other wise if you use the correct slow blow MAXI fuses.

 

I agree that something is really wrong if it blows, but it would be great. A theft deterrent and easy to cut all power if disconnecting the battery. I had not thought about the master fuse Tim uses. Will have to think about it.

 

get an engine fuse box from a fc (mazda trucj and glc have few fuse slots) to replace the fusible links. this box will also clean up your engine bay since accessories such as efan, fog lights and alarm, to name a few, can be wired directly from the box instead of battert terminal.
