choke left out

I always use the choke to start my 82 in the cold weather here, and the other day I pulled the choke out to put the car into the driveway and I didn't put the choke back in when I was done. This was about three days ago and today when I tried to start the car, the choke was still out, and the car won't start. Does anybody know if this has something to do with it? I don't know a whole lot about how the choke works, I just know that my car was working just fine a few days ago and now the engine turns over and over, but won't start up.

Check the top of the carb to see if the choke is actually working when you push it in and out. You may have a broken cable, and you really aren't setting it like you think??

it closes a butterfly to "choke" the engine of air and also activates the throttle some, thus the higher revving. you probably just flooded it leaving it open like that as you shut it down and left it sit there. see if you smell fuel. if not, get a second person to choke it with there hand or something that can block off air more the the butterfly. james did this with a bag when mine wouldn't start.

The choke should have gone back in when he turned it off.

Thanks for the help guys. I let the car sit for a while after pushing the choke back in and then tried to start it again and it seems to be working fine now. The choke works fine too, it just doesn't always go back in automatically.

Try spraying some silicon spray (like WD-40) on the linkage at the carb. Besure to get it good down where you can't see on the main throttle shaft as well. If you have to start it for a short time, and/or not warm enough for it to return automatically, push it in before turnung it off.

Did you try pushing the pedal to the floor while cranking and manually releasing the choke at the carb?
