Chilton Repair Manual vs. Hayes
Looking for an opinion, I'm attempting to get my 85 GSL-SE running after sitting for almost a decade. I'm having trouble getting the new fuel pump to work. No electricity at the pump. I've run power direct to the pump and it works. All fuses under the dash are fine, I've bypassed the fuel pump cut off switch still nothing on the factory set up. The Hayes manual I have, doesn't seem to cover this problem. And doesn't have any suggestions on what to do next. Does any one have the Chilton manual and does it contain more information? Is it worth buying or am I just wasting my money?

Oops factory stock setup, no mods, Cleaned the fuel system and boiled the tank. cleaned the fuel injectors, New fuel filter, pump and all rubber fuel lines replaced.
Man, I tell you what. 10 Y.o. Gasoline is nasty stuff. Thick as molasses and smells something fierce.

[QUOTE=Vashner;7959669] IMO you should not bypass stuff.
Bypass was only temp. Charger on ground behind car. Disconnected from electrical system. To clean fuel lines. Not going to drive it that way.
Dang didn't even read my own post. bypass was suggested by Haynes manual for checking fuel pump operation.

yea go through the faqs some sweet info in there. Probably more helpful than the manuals will be. FSM is great but it is basic, like "remove bumper"...umm k how? kinda thing

The haynes manual does give you the information you need, just not in the way you may have wanted it. There are wiring schematics in the back of the manual that cover all the electrical parts of the car. You just have to find the right schematic, or multiple schematics and trace your wires back from the fuel pump to the power source. Sounds to me like you have a bad ground or broken power wire between the relay and the pump. Study the schematics and learn how the system works, then you can diagnose the problem.

A physical copy of a Haynes manual is nice to have, especially when troubleshooting electrical gremlins. I don't have any Chilton's manuals, so I can't comment on the quality.

I am not sure on the 7 manuals from Chilton, but my dad swears by the old Chilton's and hates the Haynes manuals...sad thing is, Haynes owns Chilton now so if ya get a newer Chilton, its just a relabeled Haynes

Fortunately with our cars we need not worry about the newer chiltons lol.
As someone said the hard copy is nice. My recommendation is print it double sided (if you are going to). Makes life alot easier and uses half the paper! (cuz its like a bajillion pages)

I have both manuals for my 7. I can't stand the Chilton...it covers several, several cars...not just rotary powered cars...there are no pictures...LOL It is just harder to find what you want.
As far as the detail of information...I couldn't tell you...I usually go to my copy of the wiring diagrams (per Trochoid's sig link) or the Haynes...

Chilton manuals suck, Haynes are almost as good, if not better than the original FSM many times. Especially for our cars. Sometimes finding the right section can be a puzzle but keep looking and you'll find it all in there. I have an old Chilton, Haynes and FSM. I use the Haynes almost exclusively.

Yep. Chilton sucks. It was the 1st manual I bought when I got my 7 back in '95. It is practically worthless as it covers too many cars (none in any real detail). The Haynes will get you through almost anything that you will ever do to the car. The FSM is more hardcore to get the details on the stuff that Haynes doesn't cover well.
Haynes + FSM and you are golden.
