you got to get 'connections'
allways remember that the sr20 is an illegal engine in the USA. I heard that most stateies like to check engines. well I only heard that that was true in cali.
1) marry someones daughter thats got a 'shop'
2) ask about extra bonus money for 'quick sticker'
3) gun point
4) early modle vehicle.
5) give a shot over 2000 grand to fix it.. legaly

Use a different address for your licensing of the car in a part of your state that doesn't require emissions test. Worked for me on my truck. Also it doesn't say where your from but in Washington if your car is 25 years or older, you don't even have to take an emissions test because of some grandfather out.

It's sorta relevant
In Ontario, cars older than 20yrs are emissions exempt. So my car being an '84 is now emissions exempt.
If you unfortunately can't fall under that clause (or are in a place where the limit is 20+ yrs) then there's the second way out. Again, in Ontario, if you fail you have to make up to $350 worth of repairs to get a "conditional pass". They figure you'll do $350 this time and if you fail, you'll spend another $350 in two years, etc....
So when they fail you, go to Mazda, get a quote for the catalytic converter (alone and including replacement labour). Go back to the place and show them that to replace the cat would cost you (insert obscenely huge Mazda number in the thousands here). Convince them that there is nothing $350 will be able to buy for your car (other than a set of headers and a straight pipe... don't tell them that).
If you're lucky, they'll let you off because of the fact that your car is nearly impossible to find parts for and will throw you over the limit.
I just live across the river in Quebec, where there is no emissions testing.
Other than those legal ways, you'll have to do something shady which I cannot recommend.... but if you do manage it, power to ya.
Tricks for passing the sniffer:
- Make sure your car is completely tuned up. I mean completely. Check your timing, replace your fuel filter, air filter, oil and filter (don't forget, our cars mix oil in too!), spark plugs, spark plug wires, dist cap and rotor.
- Run a few tanks of fuel line/engine carbon cleaner. If you can, buy ethanol blended gas
- Check your mixture. If it's too rich, you're sure to fail. If it's too lean, the mixture won't combust and you'll get the misfired ones dumping straight fuel/air into the exhaust. It should be just a *little* leaner than it's normally supposed to be
- Run ethanol-blended fuel the day of the test. Add some extra stuff from your parts store like "guaranteed to pass emissions magic fuel additive in a bottle"
And if you have stupid mechanics doing the check, you can always bypass the ACV and plumb the Air Pump straight into the cats. "The solution to pollution is dilution". They're taking samples based on "parts per million". If you introduce 400,000 parts more air, that should help

you can also plum the air line off a airpump into the cat.
a friend of mine thats got a '88 n/a has 2 exhaust systems and also replaces the air pump when he need to get tested.
in massachusetts if your car is +20 years your ok for smog.. meaning pre 85. IF you buy a car and its a new register.. 20 years and younger cars.. you must get smog pass if not you must return the car to the previous owner for repairs (upid lemon laws)

I wonder how many smog guys actually check the vin under the hood with that on the reg card. Where I go, they just zap the barcode on my reg and look at my plate. If I was careless and accidentally put the wrong plate on my smog legal car...............

Just pump the airpump straight into the cat and it will pass the sniffer, visual is a different story.
