How to tell what ratio gear- make a mark on the pinion flage and then a mark on the axle at 12oclock. Rotate the axle exactly one revolution and while doing this count how many times the pinion flange turns. If it turns a little under 4.5 times then they are 4.44 and if it turns 4.75 times then it is the 4.77's.

And just ask The ebay member to get a shipping quote with out the rear piece attached because you will not need that piece. If you can get him to do that for you then maybe he will take the time to count the number of teeth on each ring
and divide the larger number by the smaller to figure out the ratio for you.

I only lock them for autocross and stock car races.
These races are on dirt tracks, so there is no risk for the axles to break.
After a couple of rounds, you get a very good feeling for the corners and you have a very good traction.
I really like 100% locked in dirt.

I met a friend 2 days ago, he knows a guy who works for KIA in Luxembourg.
And guess what .....
They are just working on an old KIA, to change the centre differential and normally the front one too.
If this happens, I can get the old parts for free.
So I first wait on this occasion.

Actually it will either be 4.44 or 4.78 for the front R&P on the kia. I believe the 96' and older had the 4.44 R&P and the 97 and newer had the 4.78 R&P. So i do believe there's a good chance that that one is a 4.78.

If I ask the guy to disassemble it and than tell him that I don't want it, he will not be happy.
That's why I prefer the method proposed by ultimatejay.
First I check if I can't get one from KIA Motors in Luxembourg, now that I have that connection.

Old [Sch|F]ool
In the US it is sehre simple:
Go to car-part.com
Look for, say, a '99 Kia Sportage front differential
Buy it from whoever is cheapest vs. how far you feel like driving
Put your limited slip diff in the pumpkin
Use an '83-85 driveshaft if you don't have one already

The great Kia Gear mystery is solved: It's not the year, it's the motor.
I did some internet snooping and found the real difference is SOHC vs DOHC motors, not the year.
Check out this amazing website: Very helpful in general.
SOHC Sportages = 4.44
DOHC Sportages = 4.77

well I bought a 4.88 out of an old 90's race car, was built mirroring RB's by a local racer, john Kearney. some of you on the east coast might know him, he built the rear (from a 81 or 82 GSL, small axle). I'm going to swap this into my '85, just need some new calipers as these are locked and the proportional valve for the drums > disc conversion. did it on the gf's '79 with a '83 GSL rear. Pretty happy I scored these old school gears for cheap and a complete rear with it and an adjustable sway bar on it too ! aha cant beat $150
