Change Automitic to Standard
Change Automitic to Standard
I'm in the process of changing my 1985 GSL from an automatic to standard transmission. I have everything I need. I'm in the process of taking the pedals out of my donor car. This seems to be a chore. Has anyone here done this?

It took me a bit, but wasn't that hard of a swap. Reason it took so long is that I had never done anything like it before, did it alone, and put in a 2nd gen transmission.
Looking back and knowing what I do now, I could probably do this swap in 2 - 3 days. Worst part of it is either working under the dash, or trying to get the smell of ATF out of your clothes/work gloves.
Good luck! Take lots of pictures. If you don't have a transmission jack, harbor freight has one for not too expensive that works fine.

yes and no. if you use a 81-83 pedals to a 84-85, or vice-versa, you will need to slot the lower hole below the steering column. I just cut it off and use a large and thick washer. This is not consider a mickey mouse job since this is just one of the many.
The hardest part in this process is getting the pedal in place due to limited space. So I recommend removal of the driver's seat , lots of heines and tell your family to leave the premises. Otherwise, they may hear you cursing.
Tranny jack is for kids. Rope the tail end and bench press that ******.

You will also have to fab up a bracket for the transmission mount as you have an 84-85 like I did.

Very nice writeup. That is pretty much what I did. Wish it was around when I did my swap. :P
I had the EXACT same problem with making mounts. I took a peice of 1/8th inch angle iron and cut off one side making a 1/4" lip. I then tack welded the cut peice flat to make a 1/4" thick peice. Mine bounces a bit as well, but seems to be holding fine.
