Is it a cheap one? Such as Roadmaster/Road Gear, etc. I've heard that they do that from time to time. My friend had a Rampage CD player in his Blazer and it kept turning on and off and the volume would go up like it was possessed. Well one day the volume spiked up and he looked off the road for a second to turn it off and ended up rear ending this old guy's truck.

I just had a simalr problem with mine...

I have modular Kenwood speakers, and it turned out that one of the cross overs I had in the back behinde the rear curtain had fliped over and was grounding out. This in turn was causing the deck to power off.

Ok so the long and the short of this is check all of your speaker wires (the whole length of the wire) for breaks or cracks or pinched spots. You probably have a shorted speaker wire. This can blow up inxsepensive CD player

Hope this helps

Good luck
