Carter fuel pump questions

I installed my Carter 4070 yesterday, and today put the cut/check valve back on a little further forward on the frame rail. Currently wondering a couple things -

-To replace my old fuel hose, I got 1/4" fuel hose. It's a little smaller than the original which I assume was metric, but 3/8" is way too big to fit on the barbs. Is this going to become a bottleneck for me?

-I can't figure out where to put my fuel filter now, especially considering that everything is very close to the axle and watts link. Is it ok to be installing stuff just in front of the axle like this? And running fuel lines just over the watts link? How worried should I be for the axle/watts link to hit a pothole and bust my fuel lines - do they move much?

I would find the correct fuel line size. Do it right, do it once. I ran my old carter fuel pump on my old setup around 4 inches from the diff pumpkin which I never liked. Ran it there for awhile and no problems. Do it right though and install near the stock location. The fuel lines shouldnt move much at all. Cable tie them together or to some other hard line if nessecary. Shouldn't have to though.

I have a TII stock fuel filter(twice the size of 12a stock filter) in my stock location along with a wablro 255 fuel pump and I have space for days..

Get those correct fuel lines. If you mod intake and exhaust in the future it will be good knowing your getting the right amount of fuel.

The Carter has to be mounted vertically, I put it on the frame rail (like Kentetsu) where the cut/check valve used to be. If I put it further forward I'll be scared of it getting too close to the ground.

Looks like I can find 5/16" fuel hose at a parts store near here.

Sounds like you need 5/16 line to do the job right. Never a good idea to not make it right when it comes to fuel.

I got everything put together now. The 5/16" goes from the tank to the fuel filter basically sitting above and just behind the watts link, down to the carter pump, to the cut/check valve, and up. So now my fuel system is a hodge-podge of sizes from 1/4" to 3/8" (just to fit the hose barbs on the pump - didn't want to take it all apart) but mainly 1/4".

Why is it so important to have the same size lines in a system that uses less than 3 or 4 PSI?

Because it will impact the flow. For a stock nikki it probably won't be an issue but
if you had a webber or holley on there it would lean out at full throttle since its
being restriced. I used 5/16 for everything. Not sure why you have 1/4" barbs on the
pump. Mine came setup for 5/16 I'm pretty sure.

No the pump came with 3/8" barbs, but I'd already set up most of the system with 1/4" because I'd originally assumed it all to be 1/4" line. It looked very close in cross-section... damn! So when I put the pump in I just sized it up to 3/8" for three inches before and after the pump itself, using hose nipples. I'm afraid I now have a very Frankenstein setup.
