Carburator help please

I have jsut swapped my 12a for a lower mileage one and am using my carb and baseplate on top of the new motor's intake manifold.

once i installed it and messed with teh vaccum plugs in teh baseplate i visually noted my secondaries were opening if i applied throttle.

i closed the hood and drove hom, notcibly down power from my older motor ( is the legend true about rotaries that they start to run bettert han they ever have justbefore they die? anyway....) If i were to guess i would say it feels like im 20-25% down in the mid to higher end.

Basically it feels like the secondaries aren't opening.

Looking again, i confirmed that - they aren't.

I have a Haynes book that has nothing on setting the carb beyond the Idle, and need to know a bit more about how the secondaries work, and what would cause them to not work all of a sudden.

is there a troubleshooting faq or a diagram anywawhere?

cheersa nd thanks

there is a little linkage that connects it the secondarys to your vaccum box thingy. that linkage may have fallen off or you may have something wrong with your vaccum. I may be completely dumb, so don't listen to me about carbs, ask Carl or Sterling, they know everything.
(p.s. always a good time to convert to mecanical secondaries!!!!)

I didnt even realize that my secondaries werent opening until I tried to go with mechanical. Figured out a few other problems on the way to fixing secondaries. Runs better than it ever did and I still have some little issues. I figured out the carb basics of how it works by simply looking at my extra one and seeing what moves what when opening throttle. That helped me the most, seeing how it all works.

Well its hard to say its the carb isint it? I mean its easy to go for the jugular and blame something but to troubleshoot you need to be more analytical. First, have you checked the compression? Have you re checked the ignition system for proper operation? You might have simply swapped a wire.

Next obvious questions are about details on your swap. What was in there and whats there now? Year of car/original engine, year of new engine.

Ok ,

thanks for your input so far, here is a little more information

the new engine is from an 84 GSL with ~130,000 km on it

no leaks in the housings and just a slight seeping in the poilpan gasket

visually it looks like a nice clean block.

The carb and baseplate are from my car, an 82. I can't say for certain that the engine is stock, it looks to me like an 83+ (the T pipe coming out of the block looks more like teh one for the beehive oil coolers .. but what do i know)

like said, i had teh secondaries working..

I haven't done a compression test on teh engine yet. but it generally seems to run quite smooth, which is why i think its a carb/vacuum issue

i am open to other possibilities though

Well if it were me, I'd test wire the secondaries to open as per the instructions inthe FAQ. Then if the car drives like you think it should, at least you know it's the secondaries and you should start looking for vaccuum leaks.

If it idles smooth at the correct idle speed then it aint a vacuum leak. Do the compression test, recheck your ignition wiring and operation. Normally you will not see the secs opening when the car is not under load. Un loaded, the engine will wind up to redline quite easily and quickly on just the primaries so you wont normally see the secs open. Unless you do something crazy like rev it 11k, which I dont suggest anyone do.
