Carb gods, give me advice

hi!

A second gener in a first gen forum? Before you chase me out with pitchforks and a torches, here me out

I really want to add the IDA 48mm carb kit from mazdatrix to my seven. Fuel injection is far superior, but it costs WAY to much for the same performance a carb can put out. What I don't understand is the way mazdatrix has listed their product, and im sure that there were a few of you who have bought this or seen it installed etc.

the link is here
http://www.mazdatrix.com/r-idamanifolds.htm

Now if you click the 48mm product, it says very specifically

'carb only, not mod'

What the hell does that mean? does that mean that its 48mm, or does that mean that its still 45 and you need to bore it out yourself?
Does it mean that I have to upgrade the jets myself and add the extra things as well?
Can I put that carb on without modifying it initially and the car will run?

I've got a streetport right now on my 13B 6 port NA, so im not expecting huge numbers or anything, just wicked throttle response and some decent performance. I understand what I need to get this kit going, like a new clutch for example and fuel pump with pressure regulator. There are a few other things as well, but we don't need to go into detail.

Anyone know the answers to my questions ?

thanks guys, I owe ya.

thats a good choice. the 48 IDA is far superior than a 45 sidedraft nor the holley. I said superior as its easy to tune, parts are easy to get (they are used on VW bugs as well), and this is the kinda of carb that can fit on almost every situation - one size fits all by just a change of jets and venturies to have more low end or more top end. It can be used on stock-bridge and even P-Port by enlarging it to a 51 mm from 48mm. In addition, in case you decide to go with F/I down the line, there is a demand for a 48 IDA.

just my $0.02

Thanks, I figured as much. Also I find this one to be 'simple' as in it looks very basic. Im just wondering if im going to have to install all the jets and **** manually, or if IM going to just take the carb out of the box with the manifold and mount that bitch up.

any suggestions are of course appreciated! thx guys!

I would have totally gone that way, trust me, but you need a standalone for that to work properly and the TB's themselves are usually around 300+ a piece X2. For NA the money that I'd throw at that would be not worth it at all IMO, cause honestly, im not rich.

I don't mind spending a grand and a little bit more (FPR, pump, lines etc) to get a good performance NA for now. Eventually I will have additional plans for this setup

install it and get a feel for it first. then if you want more aggrressive launch, use larger idlet jet, say 75, drill out the squirter and add add 1 more progression hole for better transition when coming down to a full stop. .

Not trying to be a pest here, but im still looking for an answer to my original question.

Do you need to install the jets and stuff that they include in the above link?
Is the carb already bored for 48mm?

I just need to know what "not mod" means. I mean it could be anything from not bored, to not including parts, to not functional I spose lol.

Thanks guys.

usally the shop you buy the carb from should be more than willing to answer any questions you might have as well as set up the carb to your specific application(at least thats what i do) ...if you dont have alot of carburator knowledge all this technical jabber can actually confuse you more, so be carefull ...

Maybe I should rephrase the question.

Where is the best place to buy a weber 48IDA? I've heard racing beat sells them, but I can't find **** on their page.
I understand how a carb works, I also have a wicked book that explains it in good detail if I want to cross reference anything.

What I was hoping for, was someone who did buy it from mazdatrix and could chime in on what exactly it came with and what he/she had to do to get it going, etc.

basic carb package
Supplied with: 37mm chokes, F7 Tubes with 120 Air and 135 main (fuel) jets, 120 Idle Holders and 70F10 Idles
+ Ram Stacks as shown

You have to re-jet it to make it work for a rotary.
Venturies = 42 or 43
Idle jet = 70-75
Air = 150
Main = 225
Emulsion tube = F11
Progression Hole = I havent touched a new IDA but usually, there are only 2 progression holes. Rotaries run better with 3 progression holes.
Pump Squirter = I prefer it larger than stock = buy a carb reamer kit or index drill.
For OMP lines, read on this https://www.rx7club.com/1st-generation-specific-1979-1985-18/got-my-48ida-today-racingbeat-but-400978/page2/
Just in case, for throttle cable bracket, you can also use bend the alternator bracket.
Shaft lever = more than likely, it will be set up as top pull since the new manifold is the australian style.

Also, read on ====>>>> http://www.aircooled.net/gnrlsite/re...es/jetting.htm

Buy it from Robert. He will give you free cheese.
