Angry Car overreved itself???

I went for a drive in my FB around the block and as I put it in first to 3k from a stop, it goes beyond 3k and redlines beyond 8k for approximately 6 secs by itself. Immediately as I knew that something was wrong when I approached 3k in first, the RPM shoots straight over 8k, but I had my foot already off the gas. The engine overreved itself for about 6 secs without me doing anything. I panicked and put on the brakes. While this was happening, I was expecting the RPM to go back to normal idle and never turned the key off to shut it down. At this moment I knew my engine was going to blow as white smoke spewed out from behind at the same time, the car sat over 8k. As the engine spun, it sounded like a drill that was about to explode. After 6 secs or so, the RPM came down to normal. Fearing harm to the engine, I slowly took the car back home. I then decided to see if the power band was as usual and if I would experience any symptoms of a damaged engine. I took it from RPMs ranging from 3k to 4k and observed for any power loss and if there would be any smoke. The results were as normal. I also checked the temps which were also at normal level. Right now, I feel stupid for not reacting quick enough and shutting off the engine. So what happened? I have never experienced anything like this. Am I now bound for a blown motor? Is the potential now greater than before? or I shouldn't worry and just keep in mind that these are high revving engines and it could take the beating with no probs? I apologize for the long post. I just need to vent.

is it a GSL-SE?

a friend of mine has a 2nd gen TII and the AFM flapper got stuck open and when he started it and let it idle it would shoot up and peg out the tac. its accualy blew his motor.

after we figured out what it was... we renamed the AFM to "THE FLAPPER OF DEATH!"

It sounds to me like the throttle plates just got stuck open for some reason. If it's the case just make sure something didn't get sucked in and is blocking them from staying closed. My friend (nlc1179) bought a GSL-SE about a year ago. He was driving it and all of a sudden it started idling at 6k! Took apart the intake and found a razor blade that was holding the throttle plates open. Luckily the razor blade got stopped there and didn't get sucked all the way into the engine.

Thanks for the replies guys. Nope, it's a carburetted 83. How would it feel if it were to run on one rotor? I'm afraid to drive it now after imagining if this was to happen on the highway.

Its time to lube the linkages on the carb.&make sure that the floormat hasn't slid up under the pedals. It is not a lot of fun on a crooked road in 3rd gear w/a streetported GSLSE when the throttle hangs open

Okay I need to do that. So do you think my engine was damaged through the ordeal? I'm afraid to push it hard.

If it runs fine for the next couple of days, then its fine. Over-revving rarely screws these engines up, it usually other little things.

It probably will because I drove it for a while after the incident and it ran just fine. I would like to know something else. Why does my car like to backfire? Even before this happened. Also as I punch it to higher RPMs, the car likes to jerk. It happens when I let off the gas too. The car just stutters.

So how does it feel to run on one rotor?

unless you rev it at 9k for 7 mins with the radiator cap off

If it runs on one rotor, you will know it instantly. The car will barely move, it's real bad, and real noticeable. It will have almost no power.

As per your other questions, - you need it tuned.

Yeah don't worry, if you did blow something up you would hear it. The reason for backfire might be a leak in exhaust or something in the carb not workin properly. I think it might be time to take off your carb and clean it up as it got stuck too.

That's good to hear. The white smoke that continued to spew at 8k was what scared me. I had a custom muffler welded on because I had an exhaust leak, so for the backfires, I think it's the carb. One more thing, I always get strong fumes in the cabin and sometimes the rotten egg smell. Would this be a sign of a failing cat?

Yeah, the rotten egg smell is the cat in it's death throes. Check to see if your choke linkage has come lose from the throttle. The cotter pin that holds it all together is fairly flimsy. I've had mine break before and it jammed the throttle open, causing the same problem.

I guess my motor is fine. I drove it yesterday and the day before without probs. I am still slightly worried though, but getting over it. I have yet another question. How much mpg are you supposed to get with FBs? My FB gets worse gas mileage than my FD. With my FD as long as I lay off the boost, I can get up to 20 mpg. With my naturally aspirated FB on the otherhand, I had expected to get far better mpg, but am getting roughly about 8mpg. Can it be related to clogged cats?

Clogged cats could cause some problems, but if you're getting milage that terrible, it's probably a carb issue.

I'd say send your carb to Rx7carl or sterling and get it modded if you do anything. It's a good carb mod for the price. Or just a carb rebuild.

I don't think you really damaged the engine, but be careful anyways. Hey, BTW, does anyone know what the safe RPM range is for a '88 NA?
