Autozone's cap and rotor are relatively cheap and do their job like they should.

pretty much any auto parts store should be able to get it for you, iirc I got my last set from my local NAPA, they work fine, its a pretty basic part, not too much to mess up on their end

There are two kinds of distributor caps and rotors: the expensive ones with long-wearing brass contacts (stock) and the cheap kind with fast-wearing aluminum contacts (most aftermarket). I have never found a distributor cap and rotor from an autoparts store with the better brass contacts. The reason is cost. The aftermarket stuff is in the $20-30 range, while the Mazda parts are basically $50 a set. I, personally, only buy the Mazda parts. Ignition is too important to good running and fuel economy to cheap-out on, which ends up costing you more in the long run.

Thanks for the input guys! I just wanted to see if anyone noticed any major difference from the aftermarket ones vs oem.

Thank again, Ed

Another option: grab a 2nd gen lead coil pack and convert the leading ignition to direct fire. Instructions are in the FAQ section, and its very simple to do. This will give you better performance and fuel economy, and since the leading spark no longer travels through the cap/rotor you can stick with the cheap stuff and the cost savings there will offset the cost of the coil pack (usually a 20 dollar junkyard item)...

Thanks for the heads up but I already run the 2nd gen directfire set up with 2 msd 6a boxes.

Well, in that case if you aren't running leading spark through the cap then I'd go with the cheaper model for sure...

Blake, where do you get the good caps? I bought from Mazdatrix last year and got the same junk the autoparts stores carry.

Mazda. I keep them in stock for $49.95 a set (cheaper than Mazda retail).
