Can't source a Starter Motor

Hi, I wonder if anyone could give me a modern equivalency for a starter motor for a 1981 Series 2 RX7 manual. I have tried searching online plus spent time in Ashdowns and Repco with no luck. Are they so rare? The manual shows a Bosch N221-18-400R and the local Mazda Dealer told me they might be able get one for Aus$1300

SPECS:
Hole Centres: 141mm (one threaded and one with a 11.5mm hole) - 5.5 inches
Gear: 8 teeth, Dia: 27mm - 1.06inches, Length: 22mm - 0.86inches
Centre boss: 67mm - 2.6inches
Overall Length: 250mm - 10inches
Flange to cone end: 85mm - 3.3inches
Solenoid at 45 degrees to mounting holes

Thanks,
Paul

The US auto supply store. Autozone has a re-man unit, part no. 16268, ready to ship at USD65.99 plus USD40 core charge. Shipping would cost a pretty penny, but hundreds less than your dealer estimate.

Thanks, it looks the same. I'll send them an email and ask if they'll mail it to Australia.

I’m lead to believe that any NA starter S1-S5 would work.

anyone confirm this?

so I searched eBay Australia and found auto8 selling starters. Looked up the website and found what I shared. Perhaps this will work for you?

I have rung serval Australian suppliers and no one has a SRJ054 in stock. Looks like I have to wait or buy it from the states.

Given the difficulty sourcing a reman (or new) unit, could you break down your unit and rebuild it yourself? Brushes and bearings, clean up the solenoid?

yes, the 86-91 starter moves the solenoid and looses a little weight (it was the 80's...) but it goes right in.

its worth noting that the FD and Rx8 used a lot of the same guts, or better, the big difference is the nose.

I would 2nd the idea of having the existing starter just rebuilt. I'm sure Australia still has automotive electrical business's that rebuild starters, alternators and such.

Find a local rebuilder. How about Bashi's Auto Electrics in Caboolture? That is just the first place that comes up in an internet search for "auto electric rebuilding Queensland"
