Like the title says, how badly will I lose in the 1/4 mile to my friends 88 Mustang LX 5.0 with 225 hp at the flywheel. He can spin em in 3rd and he's stock.. I think its a 3600 lb car?? Gimme some hope...

well i have a 1990 canadian cobra
if he can spin in third gear with a completely stock car then he needs some tires
i have goten thrid but that is because i have no tires left.he will beat u but i'm not sure just how bad.......if he has tires i cannot see nhim gettin third gear rubber unless he powershifts it and thewn u can pray he looses the transmission
also if he has lots of tires are u sure he is completely stock and doesn't at least have gears?
rember exhaust also adds horsepower

Looking at the numbers, I'd say you won't like the race. Assuming he weighs 3200 lbs (I think this is more accurate than 3600), has 225HP... that's 14 lbs per horse. You weigh 2600, have 135HP (stock)... that's 19 lbs per horse. Pounds per Hosepower is a fairly accurate way of guesstimating performance potential. He's got a 25% to 30% advantage on you. Try to talk him into a road race instead.

a stock 5-speed -se vs. a stock automatic 'stang would a a good race. you will lose pretty bad to a 5-speed stang.
to give a little insight into the rx vs. stang comparison:
my friend had a '90 5.0 automatic. stock 'cept a k&n and cold air intake it ran aroud a 15.8-15.9. it was kind of a slug with the stock 3.08 gears.
with 3.73's, headers, dual 2.5's, no cats, elect. fan, short belt, and cold air intake it ran 15.2-15.4 with some tranny troubles starting to develop. he hasn't had it back to the strip since the tranny rebuild, but i figure it may dip into the high 14's.
a stock 5 speed stang will run in the 14's. with gears, exhaust and tweeking the timing it will dip into the 13's.
watch out for N2O stangs though. the 5.0's respond VERY well to a little juice.

If the car is in good condition and its a 5sp and hes a halfway decent driver he'll walk all over you... LXs are lighter than the GTs, so I'm not sure of the weight as I weigh in around 3200 and I've got a GT. Just take him to some turns. That'll solve the problem. And if he has an exaust with an off-road H pipe that frees up a good amount of HP.

thanks.
Thanks for all the info. I know the owner before him ran 14.9 in the 1/4, I was just wondering where abouts I would run. So what you are saying is it would be fair if I had 185 hp as we would both have 14lbs/hp? works for me...

Stock -SE will lose. (Sorry)
I beat a new Cobra convertible at the track last week... my first-ever win on a Mustang... it was due to the fact that I had a .604 R/T and he had a 1.6 R/T... But losin' is losin' and chasin' is racin'. He totally blew past me about 30 feet AFTER the traps. Sorry bud! He ran a 14.4 to my 15.4.

I just tied an 88 gt 5spd the other weekend. I had him by a car all the way up until about 70mph then he cought up quick. If your car is stock I think you would probably lose by about 4 car lengths in the 1/4 mile. Good luck though if you do race him.
