Call for help to ALL 79 owners!

My gas tank is bad inside after I had it dipped. Its rusting so bad, I just dropped it and the gas that I poured out is brown to black. It was throwing rust through the lines that i'd change the filter every 200 miles. Well I put a new one on and the gas wouldnt go through anymore, so thats when I decided time to park it. Did anybody swap this gas tank for a newer one? I ask this is because it has the lines built into it. If this tank isnt saveable then I'm gonna get a fuel cell for it. Can anyone show me one I can use that has a side fill tube on it? Thanks, and hurry with response, I have a race june 12th (auto-x)

'79-80 gas tanks supposedly are the same.

However you physically cannot put a '81-85 tank in a '79-80 unless you modify the floor, specifically the spare tire well. Mazda went to a compact spare in '81 so they could make the tire well shallower so they could make the gas tank larger.

Dude i'd cut the whole rear end off if i have to, I dont have a spare to begin with. I buy 4 new tires, and call a tow truck if I have a problem. So pretty much i'm cutting that wheel well out anyway.

I had a rust problem in an '80 gas tank. The top was rusting, and around the hose bungs was really bad. I snapped one bung, fixed it, and tried to reinstall it again. Another bung snapped, I said screw that and it sat around for a couple months while I tried to find another 79-80 gas tank.

I never did, and ended up selling the car.
