buzzer locations?

Anybody know where buzzers are behind the dash? I have one going off ALL THE TIME, and I'm trying to find it so I can unplug it...

There is one buzzer on the back of the instrument cluster and another in the "cpu" (flasher box). The cpu is the black box next to the fuse box under the dash. What does the buzzer sound like? (i.e. Is it high pitched?) Probably the easiest thing you can try first before tearing the dash a part is to disconnect the oscillator. The oscillator is a black box mounted between the driver's side headlight and the battery. Just unplug it and see if that gets rid of your problem.

Uhh are you sure its going because the buzzer is broken and there isnt a problem?

Check to make sure that its not going because there is an issue with something.

Oil pressure is okay, temp is okay.... It's a high pitched buzz..... I think it's the door buzzer... But I'll check out the little black box you guys are talking about...

I don't think we have door buzzers.

Iirc there are buzzers for temp, low coolant, and low oil, and of course the infamous shift beeper.

Check the wiring on those 3 first. before you start unplugging things. The engine you save might be your own.

Yes, there is a door buzzer. Mine doesn't work though. The door buzzer is in the flasher box that I mentioned. There are buzzers for: low oil, low coolant, overrev, door, and headlights. If it is high pitched, it is probably the door buzzer. You may be able to clean the door switches and see if that takes care of the problem. Otherwise, you will have to repair or replace the flasher box (CPU).

Hmmm, this is interesting. I have one that sounds just like the key in ignition buzzer, but a bit more high pitched. Whenever it rains, it stays on constantly. It has to be in the engine bay though, because I am not getting any water inside the car, and the car is rust free. Once it dries off good, it'll quit, or as soon as I turn the key it'll quit. I don't know what it is, but it sounds like it is coming from behind the instrument cluster.

Later,
Bill.

Bill, that's the exact same buzzer I have going off.... And the exact same circumstances....

I unplugged both door switches, and the noise didn't go away, so I'm thinking it's that box as well.....

Does anybody know what else this "flasher box" controls? Considering I'm running no emissions, do I still need this box?

Yes, you need the flasher box. The more important things it controls are the turn signals, hazard lights, and intermittent wipers. It also controls things like seat belt warning light, light in the ignition surround, etc. I would just replace it with one for the wrecking yard or better yet, with a know good one from someone on the forum. Make sure that you get one for your year of car (i.e. if your car is an '84, get the replacement out of either an '84 or '85 car).

You could try unplugging the oscillator as I mentioned earlier (near the driver's side headlight). I don't think that this will fix it, but it might. Removing it won't have any negative consequences, you will just get the warning light if you are ever low on coolant/oil but without the buzzer that goes with it. If the flasher box doesn't fix it, the wires that go to the door switchs are getting grounded somewhere (the switch grounds the wire when the door is open). Check the switches themselves and make sure the wire is not exposed or getting pinched between a bolt and the frame.

Whenever I clean the engine bay and get water around the driver's side of the radiator and battery I have to listen to that high-pitched, slowly pushing a screwdriver through your eardrum, annoying as all hell noise for a day or two while it dries out. I'll have to try pulling the plug on that oscillator. Thanks for the info!
