Breaks

Hello. I want to upgrade my breaks, using FC, or posibly FD breaks.

My question is what do I need? Can I find it in a junkyard? Do I need any special tools? And most importnatly is there a right up?

I have searched, but did not find what I was looking for.

Thanks, Ted

RESpeed offers a big brake kit, for upgrading to the later FC brakes. You must acquire the rotors and calipers from another source, and this is not something that is super easy to install, but a person with average auto skills can usually manage the job without issues.
This kit just adapts the FC rotors and calipers to the front, and may not fit all models of 1st gen cars.

Good luck with that! Unless you've already got an SE, s4 brakes won't fit due to the different lug patterns. I believe a '86 s4 base model has the four lug pattern that's the same as a SE but the rest of the s4's use a five lug pattern. If you've got a GS the SE front and rear brakes are a good upgrade they're bigger and have the rear disc. Also with that comes the LSD (just find a whole SE rearend), and the 14inch wheel upgrade. Honestly I would say the SE brakes and steel braided lines stop the car just fine. I had to use the whole front susension from a SE in mine cause I rock the 13b and needed the heavier springs. The swap goes easy cause everything is made for the car!

Your 85 GSL is as good as it's going to get for the upgrade since it has the proper spindle size for the upgrade. The details can be found here:

This will do the fronts. There are no kits to upgrade the rears so you'll have to go to a spacer plate with the proper bolt pattern to match the rims, front to back.

You do need to mess around with the brake lines some, and the parking brake cable (rear section only) will need to be swapped out.
