brake rotors

what is the differance between the rear rotors of a gsl and a gslse besides the wheel bolt patern? Are they different in diamiter? or the thickness?

I believe the SE rotors also have a deeper hat,to compensate for the SE axles and their wider track width. This increase in track is negated by the stock SE wheel's high negative offset.

if the hat was deeper then the axles would have to be longer. I thought the bearing size , the splines and the wheel bolt patterns where the only differance I thought the axles were the same length?

They are longer, but only the external part from the bearing out to the wheel flanges.Spline and shaft length are the same. And all 84-85 cars have the big bearings and splines, not just the SE.
All the 85-85 housings are the same, but when you bolt up an SE rearend into a 12A car, ever notice that your wheels are about 3/4" closer to your fender lip? That gain comes from the increase in axle length from the bearing to the flange.Since the housings are the same, hence the caliper mount is the same....Im pretty sure the SE rotor hat has to be deeper,to get the disc back to the caliper center......unless the SE caliper itself has a longer reach.....thats why I said "I believe"......

Id have to take some measurements from my car and my old GSL rearend to be sure......

I can't find a gslse rear near me. I do have an 83 disc rear I was going to have my axle shafts redrilled to accept the gslse bolt pattern and use the gslse rotors and calipers.

Ah,got it.

If no one chimes in,Ill take a look at my old GSL rear end this weekend, and compare it with the spare SE axles I keep around for my car.

Ill let you know what I find....

cool thanks it seems as though it should work. But if the axles are longer then I will have to look harder for a new rear.

You can install SE rotors, calipers, axles, caliper brackets into a GSL rear, I have just done this. I recommend you use SE axles and it will be a straight bolt in job. Note the caliper brackets are different and the mounting bolts are bigger then GSL.

PS the wheel options are huge with SE rear......grins....

well i can't really use the se axles because my axle housing is an 83 and the bearings are smaller aren't they?

Correct.
The 84-85 cars all had bigger axles and outer bearings.
The 84-85 GSL and SE disc brake rearend housings were all the same.It was the axles, calipers, rotors and backing plates that differed on the SE.

I should have those 2 axle comparisons by tonite.....

Couldnt get to my GSL axle right now,but I got some measurements off the SE axle shafts so you can compare with what you got now.....

Total length of the SE axle is 28 1/2".
From the disc mounting surface to the center of the outer bearing is 2 7/8".
Installed, the total exposed axle length from the backing plate retainer to the disc mounting surface is 2 3/8".

I just measured my 83 axles and they measure the same. I guess the conversion should work. well I've got the calipers all I need now is some rotors.
