Brake lines rubber or SS?

I recently had my 1980 SA's brakes checked as the brake light was coming on when the hand brake was released. They said the pads and rotors looked ok, fluid was a little low so they topped it off. And although they didn't find any leaks they said the rubber hoses looked origianal, slightly cracked, and should be replaced on the front.

They quoted my $70 for the rubber brake lines, parts only. I checked Racing Beat & MazdaTrix and they have complete, front and rear, Stainless Steel kit for $95. However it says for those with rear disc conversion. Mine still has rear drum. Although I am thinking of adding rear disc but it will be a while, > 1year.

Can I get the SS lines and only use the front lines for now?

Do they add more to the installation process/cost?

If you are going to buy the parts yourself, rubber front hoses will cost you about $40.

If you go with SS, then make sure they are DOT approved (didn't think RB were)

It takes the same amount of labor to install either unit, but remember shops are out there to make a profit.

What should you buy, how do you drive the car? If its just a car, go rubber and move on.

Otherwise get some DOT SS brakelines, you will get better pedal feel.

I only know VB has them for sale. In general SS lines have less fade and don't expand like there rubber counterparts. Anyone who has really hit the binders hard at tight turns knows what fade is! Any upgrade to your brakes is almost a must-do ,especially if you drive hard.

The problem that can occur with SS brake lines is that dirt gets into the braiding. This gets next to the hose, rubs like sandpaper and causes wear. Eventually you can get a leak/failure if it goes on long enough. DOT approved don't have this problem, I believe these type are sealed against dirt getting in.
