There is no site that I know of for the early years. There is a publication called Old car price guide that does cover it. Available at most good news stands or some of the bigger book stores.
You may be able to obtain some info by calling your insurance company. KBB used to go back to the 1900's. I think the books may only be available by subscribing to them or thru some of the insurance companies.

Well that's pretty shitty. Sucks to lend things out to people and you don't even get it back. Anyways, if you do pick up one send me a PM and let me know, thanks again.

You can get used car values for 1st Gens at www.NADA.com. It takes some digging and you can't specify mileage, but it's there. They go back as far as '79.

that NADA website worked. damn.. 2700 for a average retail good condition 1984 Rx7 GS.. with a clean title of course. thats a lot more then i expected. the high retail value is 3700, which pretty much means its in perfect condition inside and out.

I got the $3,700 for my tan 84 GSL when it was rearended, I argued that it would cost that much to replace the car (it was in great shape at the time). The best part was they let me keep it, which I repaired and kept driving! As in your case, it was clearly the other guys fault, so be insistant that you "get it replaced or completely repaired". That $2,700 should look like a pretty good settlement from the insurance company's point of view.

although I completely agree with you, i'd really rather not have them take the car off my hands for $2700. i've just spent probably about $3000 over the past few months doing work here and there to the car and I wouldn't want that to go to waste. Plus, $2700 really won't buy me much. If anything, I wouldn't have a problem going to the small claims court if it's an issue with the insurance company.

That's what I am saying, make sure they realize the car is worth way more than blue book by documenting your work and explaining that you cannot replace it for 75% of the blue book value. Then ask that they settle for the actual cost of the repairs, which could be up to the blue book or even more if you can show the car had that much in it, as I was able to do.
The $3,800 check the trucker's insurance company gave me (not counting the $400 car rental they also paid for) was "for the cost of repairs". I kept the car and title, which was not designated a "salvage" title.
Here's some pictures of the car and the damage before and after I fixed it:

I think I was lucky, I don't think insurance companies are usually this reasonable, but I'm sure if I hadn't taken the time to document what I had into the car I would have gotten a much worse settlement.
Good luck!

Yea for sure, we'll figure it out. I have all my reciepts of all the work i've had done and added to the car so i'm gonna make sure I get what I want out of this, which is just to have it looking the way it did prior to the accident. Damn, if i got $3,800 and no salvage title.. i'd be shittin my pants. hahaha.

Those values are not going to be the same as what you may get. Insurance agencies often have there own internal ways of determinging value. My 1989 GXL was listed at $3200 high value. I received $4000 for it when it got totalled from state farm (I only paid $2k!).
I believe our cars are worth a bit more than what they show for the high values, but the 'clean' values are near the correct value.
the 79 SA is worth $3,200 though! I'd consider the car high value since we did so much work on it.

yea i realize that, but i've had probably about $2000 worth of work put into the car (with all reciepts accounted for) and it was in great condition. great and clean looking paint job, very very clean interior, and ran perfectly fine. so i'm not too worried.
