blew the 13B-PP

So I blew my engine a few weeks ago drag racing. At first I thought i broke a carbon seal but when I disassembled the engine I found that all my seals were fine. To my surprise I spun a bearing on the front rotor. I think I lost oil pressure but I am not sure since my gauge stopped working and I did not repair it. I have no one to blame but myself for the stupidity of running without the most important gauge we need in our cars. I already have another rotating assembly, so i should be back on the track real soon with a fresh motor, oil pressure gauge and water temp gauge. I took some pictures of the carnage so you could all laugh at me. haha.

Oof! Sorry to hear about that. Good thing it wasn't a seal, it could have been worse.

Good luck on your next engine. If you don't mind me asking, why did this one make such little power for a 13BPP? Was it the exhaust restrictions?

it was running lean for the longest time. The night I blew the engine was the first night that i had the new venturies, jets and idle jets in the weber that racing beat and some local carb gurus suggested. I have a new dual 2" exhaust on the car so once the new engine is tuned it should be all good.

sorry to hear that Chris, that is why i mod my front plate so that the front bearing sees as much oil pressure as the rear, also if you don't already have one, make a baffle for your oil pan,so the oil doesn't flow away from the pick up tube under launch.

Paul what kind of mod did you do to the front plate so it sees as much pressure as the rear.

Sorry to hear. Hope you get back on the track real soon. My car is down due to broken axles, so I am in the same boat. I am going ford 9". With the new freshened up motor and correct jetting you too should be thinking about a new rearend soon because that pport will blow that stock one up in just a matter of time.

My new main and rotor bearings came in today, they are being delivered to my father inlaw to be pressed into the old stat gears and into the new rotors. Along with that my oil pressure gauge and copper tubing came in yesterday. Should be ready for the big race weekend in 2 weeks.

thats why it spun the bearing..
use either mobil 1 or royal purple.. did you shim the front oil press regulator?
rear?
did you buy an e shaft yet?
if you didnt i would reccomend using an rx8 e shaft for several reasons.. its only around $200.00 too

the rear reg has 4 washers in it already. front regulator????????? is there one. I was given a real good condition GSL-SE rotating assembly. What do you need to do to run the 8 shaft. does it not have to be balanced to the rotors. Royal purple should work since i premix oil in the gas.

I'm open to any help you can give me.

the regulator for the front rotor is in the front cover, at the bottom, shim that too...if you didnt shim it that could have added to your bearing failure too...
the rx8 e shafts are balanced as neutral wich means separatly so all you need to do is buy one and install it... you will need a 86-and up front pulley bolt and a thermo pellet plug... its so worth it

Got my rotors and e-shaft today. Enclosed are a couple of side by side photos of the old on the left, the newly cleaned, fresh bearing new rotors.

As well as getting them tonight I assembled them in preparation of the engine build Saturday.

A Hayes engine did that. It still could be turned with a 19mm socket on the front bolt, but the starter cranked real slow. Turned out the pickup tube fell into the oil pan. lol

Blew the 13B-PP, Now she is rebuilt stronger

It runs, and sounds good. Finnished about an hour ago, cant wait till I can take her for a rip. Seems to be running better than it did before. We'll have to wait, racing is friday night and its Import Invasion this saturday at our local track as well. I'll get a vid of her runnign in the next few days.
